Uh whoops--in Canada I meant to add. Hopefully it's selling way more than that if you add in the US market ;) D'oh. Sorry. Very tired. jessica n. weiser - http://adam.nettfriends.com/Jess "they'll be sorry when the star buries the girl, so help me vanish, help me get myself outta here" - e. gryner ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Sep 1998 09:35:51 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Emm @ Guelph - some ramblings Can-Music-Folx & Headline Girl Folx (all 20 of ya), Those of us, literally squeezed into the Black Mustard (a relatively new eatery, not normally given to the rock-folk crowds there to see Emm and Rufus) were treated to a short, but sweet set by none other than the very fabo Emm Gryner. Emm was literally locked out of the venue due to crowds and some quick unlocking by several of her pals got her in. Fresh from LA Emm, slid into Your Sort of Human Being and then into a fervent Phonecall 45. Mid-way through the set set start asking for requests and got quite the response! Hello, Aquarius was decided upon, "...for all the Aquarians out there..." Then another hotly debated request, Straight to Hell, her Clash cover. It was amazing! The crowd went _wild_! The few couple of bars of Summerlong, provoked a thorough round of applause, echoed again at its conclusion. She finished the set with a special request, _Acid_. The applause was encore-worthy, but sadly, Rufus was due on in a couple of minutes for his 10:30 (firm) start. It was a crowded, yet intimate show, Emm impressed the creme de la creme of Guelph's Folk Scene (several of whom were shut out due to the small venue size (100)). It was great to see Emm, and again at such a small venue so close to home. Driving home a bit later (apres Rufus) a bit wistfully as I realized, its only a matter of time before its the back of a crowded seated venue with an Emm-like speck on stage. *sigh* Emm quickly zipped off to catch up on some much needed Z's. (Take a look at her recent and upcoming tour schedule to see what I mean!) Tomorrow _ Hamilton + La Luna for more of the same! Rufus Wainright was every bit _on_, as always. His set was very similar to the show he did with Sean Lennon about a month ago. In rare form, he bantered with his sound guy "Lurch". Then he managed an odd pyschic link, starting "Barcelona" just as I was opening my mouth to request it. He's a charmer that's for sure, he plays with the passion of a spanish troubador or maybe a medieval saint. St. Rufus of the keys. I'm really put in mind of some of the folky stuff Bowie did before the Space Oddity album, stuff like "Sell Me a Coat" and "Letter to Hermoine" (though that was later). Grand caberet-style stories told in a larger-than-life fashion. Like our dear Emm, Rufus is much bigger; much larger-than-life on the stage than off of it. He's another see-him-while-you-can. Do it, or invest in a good set of opera glasses. :-) Aside from the wonderful music and touching base with a few Guelph muscial aquaintances, it was nice to be home by 11:45. :-) Sometimes I love this town! James. P.S. If anyone can forward me directions to the Emm gig at the Beaches on Monday (part of Mix 99.9's Beach Fest) its for a high school friend of Emm's who'd like to make the trek out! Yes, Kelly LeBrock is the "actress". I meant to mention also, Emm's video for Summerlong is now at Much, call, request it. I wanna _see_ it!
