Oh Susanna is just Suzie Ungerleider, sometimes she has a band, sometimes its just her. Did she do _Fullsome_Prison_ (my fav)? You should've went up and said "hi", it would have made her day for you to think she's "famous" :-) > Also who can tell me: Is Moxy Fruvous one of those bands whose albums > aren't worth it cuz they're sooooo much better live? And how long have > they been around??? cuz I remember them when I was about 8 or so and I'm > 15 now....but yet they look like they're in their 20s! Sorry for all the > questions...but I didn't pay attention to the moxy thread :I I think they're all around my age (early 30's), Jian Ghomeshi is 31, Dave Matheson is 32, Mike Ford is about to turn 36, and Murray Foster is 31. Jian would be the "cute long-haired guy". ;-) How much did they pay you to say they look like they're in their 20's?! :-P The Frus are good people, though I've only ever met Jian. They've been around since the mid-80's in various forms, as MF only since around '90 (I think). _Bargainville_ was early 90's... '92-'93. They played Hillside in Guelph around that time, though maybe '94 (this was all before I started to keep track of the music I saw). They are _much_ better live since they really pick up on the vibe of the crowd, but its worth picking up _Bargainville_ at least, and "Live Noise", which is live, duh. :-) If memory serves (and I didn't write this down so... :-) ) there are Major Heavy Fruheads here on the CanMus list, so I'm very confident they'll fill in the gaps and correct the potential errors :-) :-) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 10:45:46 -0400 From: Colleen Campbell Subject: Re: Folkfest day 1!!! The indie tape came out in '92, _Bargainville_ was '93. They played in other bands (Jian and Murray were together in Tall New Buildings; Jian, Murray, and Mike were the Chia Pets, a cover band) before busking as Moxy Fruvous for a lark near the Bloor St. Cinema, starting in '90 or so. They started going big in '94, when the Bargainville Tour took them across Canada and to Europe, dipping down a bit into the States. Since then, it's been _Wood_ in '95 (very, very different from their live work; much more of a studio piece), _B Album_ in '96 (an EP: their short, satirical songs), _You Will Go to the Moon_ in '97 (more like Bargainville in terms of its eclectic material), and finally _Live Noise_, which just came out in May and would be recommended for the newbie or fan of their live shows. >If memory serves (and I didn't write this down so... :-) ) there >are Major Heavy Fruheads here on the CanMus list, so I'm very confident >they'll fill in the gaps and correct the potential errors :-) :-) *innocent whistle* I have no idea what you're talking about. For the record, there was so much on this list about Emm Gryner that, having not heard a note of her music, I picked up a tape--and have been very impressed. Is _Public_ her only work? After a while, I gave up on reading all the stuff about her (since I couldn't relate) that I just deleted the messages, so don't assume I know anything about her, just because it's already been said here. *smile* ceecee Colleen Campbell o/~ Fruphoria! o/~ ceecee@fruvous.com "Cana got your email and came marching in to ask me, `Deb, Colleen wants to know, are you sore?" She has a bunch of stuff, the most readily available of which would be _The_Original_Leap_Year_ its an extremely well-produced indie CD which HMV _was_ distributing, but I haven't seen it there since the release of _Public_. There are several songs in common. The new stuff on _Public_ is frankly some of her best work, my fav "Summerlong" and one of Steve I's favs _Phonecall 45_ are proof positive Emm is (a) going places and (b) getting BETTER! Emm's Disco-graphy :-) 1995 - And Distrust It (if you find it buy it! Its out of print. I think I know only two people who actually have it!!) 1996 - The Original Leap Year 1996 - Girl Versions (Emm does covers of The Clash, Foo Fighters, Paul Weller and Stone Temple Pilots) 1997 - Sodium Rainbow (4 songs from Emm and 3 pals, Sarah Slean, Dylan White, and Jen Lord) 1998 - Summerlong Promo (45) 1998 - Public 1998 - Public Speaking - where Emm talks about her songs. Except for _TOLY_ and _Public_ these are hard to find items. James. (Looking forward to Emm and Rufus Wainright, just down the street and around the corner on Thursday ) :-) :-) :-) :-) ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Aug 1998 15:02:17 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Something to chew on or why SOCAN sucks. Here's somethin' pertinent to Canadian Music that's from Saturday's Globe and Mail: "The royalty tariffs at SOCAN are among the lowest in the Western world. Fees in the U.S. are about five times as much; in Europe they're 10 times as much. Sorry!!! Mmmmmm…fruvalicious :D Alright, day 3 of the folkfest (yes, I missed day 2) I met my friend Angel on my trek across the city to Lakeside and arrived early. So we sat on the rocks by the beach for awhile and then went to wait for the shuttle bus. We spent the half hour ride to the first stop trying to find the best place to station myself on the bus so I could be heard. It sucked everywhere…it’s a bus for god’s sakes! :p then the bus driver suggested using the bus mike (intercom thing) to counter act the effects of the non-existant acoustics and the super loud motor. Angel held the mike for me while I tried my best to sing and finger the chords as we bumped along the noisy transitway. At least ppl clapped…But thanx to one guy I felt like I had gotten somewhere…just to get thru to this one guy made it worthwhile…he moved closer so he could hear me better and he sang along…at the end he gave me his card and invited me to go to some jam or something…and a women told me a had a great voice, too bad nobody could hear me. :p What a dumb idea, trying to perform on an oc bus :p but at least I had the rest of the day ahead of me! J I ate my packed lunch cuz I didn’t feel worthy enough to go mingle with the performers in artist hospitality even tho I was allowed to…anyway, that would’ve meant leaving Angel alone (cuz they wouldn’t let her come too) Now for a quick summary: Go check out the Wyrd Sisters!!! They’re from Winnipeg and they’re incredible!!!!! Ferron’s quite good as well, her backup plays what we called a "bodyless cello" and taps her feet in the same way Camille does J The much hyped Arlo Guthrie didn’t really impress me…*shawna hides cuz all the Guthrie fans are coming this way with big sticks…* I loved how couples were coming with their little babies :D Those kids are lucky, they’re gonna have such great taste in music! *My* parents never took me to anything cool like that :p THEN the most AMAZING thing ever happened!!! me and Angel were scouting the crowd for ppl w/ bright yellow performers bracelets, and we saw one! then we heard someone say "Hey, that guy’s from Moxy Fruvous!" *FREAK OUT!!!!* Somehow we managed to talk to him (Jian) and he commended me on being a bus performer (aaaaaaa!!! moxy compliment!!!!) and "rock on Canadian musicians" he signed Angel’s frisbee (now a "fru-sbee" J) and I wanted him to sign my folkfest pamphlet but it was all soggy so he signed my box of BiteLife!!! (now a "moxy boxy") :D Now whenever I eat BiteLife I’ll think of Moxy Fruvous! J he is SUCH a sweetie!!! AND a cutie! **AND** a musician!!!!!! WOW!!!! whew, we were both pretty freakin happy for the rest of the day J So…bottom line, GO CHECK OUT THE WYRD SISTERS and YAY FRUVOUS!!!!! J Passengers, add this to "Memorable summer concerts" CanMusers, thanx to you fruheads who gave me info! Much appreciated! J 2 more days till school, luv Shawna =) oh yeah, as per usual with my word processor, J's are :)'s ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V1 #60 ***********************************
