Butler's return to the States follows an extremely successful SRO performance at New York's Bowery Ballroom last June 3. David Sprague, writing in Daily Variety (June 5), had this to say about Butler's first (and then-only) U.S. solo performance: "...lack of trendiness doesn't work against the rail-thin Butler, though; it actually plays on his strengths, chiefly a rich resonant voice and a feathery touch on acoustic guitar. He used those tools to utterly entrance a full house, which remained hushed -- yes, even at the biz-packed bar -- through introspective, baroque songs such as the set-opening 'Autograph' and the lilting 'You Just Know.' As ornate as they can be in full-band mode, those songs translated surprisingly well to this stripped-down setting, thanks in large to Butler's effortless instrumental flourishes." Bernard Butler first came to widespread public attention as the guitarist and co-songwriter for The London Suede. Leaving that group after two albums, Butler wrote and recorded People Move On, his debut solo album on Creation/Columbia. People Move On was released in the U.S. on April 21, 1998, and has been generating worldwide critical acclaim in both mainstream and underground publications. In Rolling Stone's summer double issue (July 9-23), Mac Randall wrote: "The successful unveiling of Butler's pipes is People Move On's most significant surprise; his brand of vocalizing turns out to be a likably raspy cross between The The's Matt Johnson and Humble Pie's Steve Marriott at their least histrionic. The old-fashioned big-pop-production quality of the songs (a far cry from his former band's campy glam rock) means extra fun. Almost every track swims in strings, either real or via mellotron, and the operative tempo description throughout is 'unrushed.' Two cuts, 'Woman I Know' and 'Autograph,' stretch well beyond the eight-minute mark but never outstay their welcome. Add some frisky guitar work and you've got a stately, near-Spectorian delight." Musician's Dev Sherlock was similarly impressed: "You'd be hard pressed to find many similarities here with Butler's earlier work, save for some exceptional guitar playing. Instead, he's crafted a warm, engaging album that recalls classic references--Townsend, Beatles, Buffalo Springfield--without resorting to Noel Gallagher-style thievery. His songwriting is mostly acoustic-based, though with a flair for drama; both the title track and the opener 'Woman I Know' begin quietly, with gentle Nick Drake-like vocals, then build to soaring choruses with bold strings and the strong, soulful voice of backup singer Denise Johnson....But it's Butler's approach to recording guitar parts that keys this album's sound." David Sprague, in the May issue of Interview, wrote "Most folks thought that Butler was committing career suicide by walking away from his post as Suede's guitarist at the band's peak four years back. This aptly titled solo bow shakes off most of the ghosts of lives past. Taking the spotlight on a subtly shaded assortment of gently psychedelic musings ('You Just Know') and '70s-style power ballads ('A Change of Heart'), the unassuming Butler successfully negotiates the tricky transition from guitar hero to sensitive frontman much the way kindred spirit Peter Frampton did a generation ago." Meanwhile, Dave Thompson, in Alternative Press (June) had this to say, "Butler's voice is a revelation....Triumphs really don't come much better than this." As he grew up, he fell under the sway of old-time performers like AL JOLSON and EDITH PIAF, following a timeline through the EVERLY BROTHERS, the BEATLES, EURYTHMICS and the THOMPSON TWINS. His dramatic piano-driven pop is very much in the tradition of classic song, from STEPHEN FOSTER to TIN PAN ALLEY to BRIAN WILSON. "From a musical and lyrical standpoint, he's clearly on the edge, which to me is always exciting," says Dreamworks principal, Larry Waronker. "He's doing something musically that his peers haven't done. It's very sophisticated in a time when true musical sophistication doesn't often emerge.." "It's very refreshing and new. He's got it, whatever it is - the gift."
