 Liz Phair's first new album in 4 years, whitechocolatespaceegg, will finally
see the light of day this week, and Phair herself can be seen performing on
CBS' LATE SHOW WITH DAVID LETTERMAN this Wednesday night.

 Principal photography has wrapped on THE MINUS MAN, writer/director Hampton
Fancher's adaptation of the Lew McCreary novel, about a mysterious stranger 
(BOTTLE ROCKET's Owen Wilson) in a small town, whose past catches up with him.
MINUS also stars Janeane Garofalo, Brian Cox, Mercedes Ruehl, Dwight Yoaham,
Dennis Haysbert, and Sheryl Crow, making her acting debut. Fancher makes his
directorial debut with this SHOOTING GALLERY presentation, after        having
written such films as BLADE RUNNER and THE MIGHTY QUINN, and appearing as an
actor in GUNSMOKE, THE FUGITIVE, and MAVERICK.

Tired of hearing Alanis Morissette's whine on the radio and feel ill at the
thought of a new album from her? Weary at the hype Lilith Fair generated, a
lot of it coming from your local testosterone-fueled rock station? Are you
already sick with anticipation of another round of "women in rock'' blah-blah-
blah now that albums from Liz Phair and Hole are ready to roll?

Good, we say. Not because any of these artists are worthy of scorn and the
inevitable backlash that comes with mainstream success on a massive scale. But
if you're sick of the hype, that means you'll be more cynical about the
manipulation that's going on with the whole "women in rock'' movement.

Let's get real about this. "Women in rock" isn't something that started in
1993 when Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville emerged, continuing when Hole's Live
Through This arrived in 1994 to critical raves and major media. Women have
always been in rock. Hard-edged women, muscular women, strongly opinionated
women who you wouldn't dare to challenge on any level. Grace Slick, Chrissie
Hynde, Janis Joplin, the women of Fanny, Joan Jett, even Pat Benatar, for
chrissakes.

Go back to the beginning of rock 'n roll and look at the work of Ruth Brown
and Big Mama Thornton. Do you really think "Roll With Me, Henry'' is about a
hayride?

These days, women don't have to couch their sentiments in euphemisms. That's
good, but really a minor point in the women in music timeline. The only thing
that's changed with the advent of this whole "women in rock" trend is
society's readiness to hear a strong woman's message and the record company
marketing department's willingness to exploit that.

That makes women in rock a commodity. And that's wrong on any level, even one
that purports to be empowering.

Liz Phair has always been about frustration, albeit in a sexual and political
vein. So imagine how painful it was for her to endure over a year's worth of
scheduling postponements before delivering her new Matador/Capitol album,
whitechocolatespaceegg.
	
First, there was the matter of giving birth to son James Nicholas in December
of 1996 (you try writing and recording while in labor!) During the recovery
time, Phair decided to re-work several songs on the album (rumors that the
first edition of the album was rejected by Matador records are firmly denied
by all parties). Then, all the delays meant producer Scott Litt had to leave
the project, citing other commitments.
	
No problem. Well, here's the good news: the wait is over. Now, here's the
better news: the wait was worth it. whitechocolatespaceegg, the follow-up to
1994's Whip-Smart, is as powerful a guitar pop record as you'll hear in this
age of beat-driven electronica. With assists by such prominent guest musicians
as R.E.M's Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Bill Berry and Young Fresh Fellow Scott
McCaughey, Phair positively rocks in her own poignant, ascorbic style. 

Early contender for best pop song of the year is "Polyester Bride,'' which
would have been a nominee for top summer record had it come out sooner than
August. It's perfect driving music.  But battling it out for equal attention
are such equally effervescent cuts as "Big Tall Man'' and "Love Is Nothing,''
both of them positively Alex Chilean-like in their embrace of melody.
	
Not to say that Phair has forgotten the sort of raw sexuality that first
stamped her as an artist to watch. For fans of that side of Phair, there's
"Johnny Feelgood,'' which has some decidedly explicit recollections of an
awakening in the back set of a convertible.
	
Phair, whom many rock historians credit for starting the whole new wave of
interest in women in rock, has come up with a potential album of the year. Our
only complaint is that we had to wait even a minute longer than necessary. >>

I was wondering if anyone was planning to tape the Lilith Fair radio 
special this weekend or would be willing to do so?

CHUM-FM is airing it here in Toronto, and while I'd love to hear it, 
I'll kinda be *at* Lilith while it's on, so... ;-(

Anyhow, please let me know if you are taping it, getting it taped, or 
think you can tape it!
