[James McGarry Subject: SF gets Hip-er For those Canadian Music lovers south of the 49th. Um, actually _well_ south of the 49th. KFOG in San Franciso/San Jose is broadcasting a hour-long Tragically Hip session (7 p.m. Pacific Time/ 10 EST) recorded in their studios earlier this week. It'll also be broadcast simultaneously on RealAudio at http://www.kfog.com for those a little outside the SF/SJ area. I just hope they know the way to... ;-P James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 10:38:37 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Ottawa bands, Zoebliss and Water Can... Well, ...sheepish grin... here's where I answer my own (and Steve Ito's) question about Hennessey and Water Can... Straight from the Hennessy bio: "Born of the ashes of two successful Ottawa bands (September Child and Watercan), Hennessey has spent much of the last year recording their new album. The beginnings were tracked by renowned engineer, Trina Shoemaker (Daniel Lanois' prodigy) whose credits span the likes of Sheryl Crow's last and upcoming albums, Midnight Oil's latest, The Tragically Hip's Day for Night and Kinnie Starr's current project.* "We wanted to create something we could be proud of," Pamela told one interviewer, "something of enough quality to stand along side anything else on the radio today." The result is a CD with ten strong songs, each of which is substantial enough to be a single it its own right." I'm trying to remember without my notes, but I think Pamela was the original vocalist for Water Can... So Steve, that's why we liked 'em :-) James. * For those of you who don't know its "Mending" out, um, sometime later this year I think on Mercury. Cool spool logo! ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Jul 1998 18:26:01 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Recent press stuff (Sarah, BNL, Duncan, Liz)... Hey, all... Was catching up on my magazine reading today, and found a bunch of good stuff here and there... First off, there are reviews of BNL's "Stunt" in the current issues of Rolling Stone and Newsweek. The bad news is that both are pretty negative. Rolling Stone gave it 2 1/2 stars and basically said it's too fluffy. Newsweek pointed out some good stuff, but ended off by saying they try too hard and can't find a balance between the serious and the jokey. Hmmm... See, they *still* don't get it! Sales may not be astronomical at home, but at least our reviewers have been generally quite effusive, and rightly so. IMHO, it's a brilliant album, and those who don't see that just simply don't get it *or* BNL. Sarah content in some magazines this month as always - the new issue of YM is guest-edited by Kevin Williamson of "Scream" and "Dawson's Creek" fame, and teen starlet Katie Holmes of "Dawson" and Williamson's upcoming "Killing Mrs. Tingle", is the cover subject. Well, Ms. Holmes apparently has very good taste, as she proclaims Sarah her "favorite singer" in the inside interview. :) The Divine Miz M is also in the new Rolling Stone, pictured with fellow Lilithian Sinead O'Connor and a tiny written blurb. Also in Rolling Stone is a short but interesting interview with Toronto Lilith replacement Liz Phair, plus a 4-star review of her upcoming new album, "whitechocolatespaceegg". I wasn't a huge fan of her older stuff, it's just not my thing, but I like her as a person and an artist, and I really like the softer sound of one of the tracks I've heard off the new album, "Uncle Alverez", which is on the excellent Starbucks Lilith compilation. Looking forward to catching her set at Lilith - she better play "Supernova"! :) Finally, the wonderful Duncan Sheik (hey, Beth, Lisa, the rest of my fellow Duncan fans, where the heck *are* ya?!) gets a page to himself in the new issue of Vogue. His new album, "Humming", is due in October, and I for one can't wait. :) He says it's a little less languid and introspective than the last album, which should be interesting. Okay, get yerselves to a bookstore; my work here is done. - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V1 #36 ***********************************
