Ok, it's 9:50 pm...and I just got back from Slackfest 98...yes, it's still going on....goes till 11....but my friends wanted to leave so I went with them, cuz I didn't want to be by myself...and when I say "by myself" I mean it almost literally...there were about 20 ppl there....50% were band members.....42% were friends/family of band members and 8% were FANS (me!!!) who came to see the amazing bands... of course I like to *think* of myself as "friends" of Big Sur and TAMMY RAYBOULD!!! :D So, the review has begun.... We got there at 4:00 (it had started at 2) we missed the band of one of the guys at my school :p but Wave was playing....they were great but we had missed half their set....then Slackjaw came on....they're awesome! Everyone was just having a good time....very relaxed....beau- tiful day, beautiful view...Slackjaw invited Understorey up for a couple of numbers and when Understorey went up next, they invited Slackjaw up for a couple of numbers....Slackjaw also did a cover of Hard Day's Night :) and some Mighty Mighty Bosstones song... SJ and US were both awesome....one of the singers from Understorey reminded me of Raine Maida from OLP...and he had amazing eyes and a great voice! :) Then TAMMY came on!!!!!!!!! WOW!!! Started w/ Adia...then she did some originals and then she said "any Tori fans out there?" and we screamed and I yelled out "she's in Toronto today!!!" and Tammy said "really? oh yeah, I heard she's in Montreal tomorrow!" and she sang some Tori (I didn't know the song very well...I can't remember what it was...) Then she played ANGEL and I cried :) yes...I always do when I hear Angel....she played the opening chords to BAM and she said "guess what song this is" and I yelled out "Building a Mystery!!!" she nodded :) from then on she kept looking at us cuz we were all singing along w/ everything--i knew most of her material cuz I remembered them from Canada day--she did more originals...she said "If anyone knows the doo doos to this song, sing along...it's Paula Cole" so of course we sang :) the people in front of us found it funny :) she did Ice Cream and more originals...we went to meet her after her set...she remembered me from Canada day and signed my Lilith advertisement and I got a picture with her!!! :) I must get her cd... Big Sur was on next....the lead singer remembered me from thursday and I remembered their songs! he broke a string in the middle of a song :) that was funny :) the big joke of the evening was how small an audience there was...we did the "wave" but it ended up as the "ripple" :) we left after Big Sur :( Nectar was on next and I wanted to stay but my friends were leaving so I left too.... there's my newest story....9 bucks for that concert! proceeds to Big Brothers....sooooooooo worth it!!! Can't get enough of Tammy! She's just so talented and plays great music (her band wasn't with her today btw...she played everything alone at the piano) I hope I'll catch her at Lilith....luckily I got to meet her before she gets really big and commercial! well....it's 10:16 now...and this won't get sent till tomorrow anyway cuz my modem's screwing up....but WOW!!! Haven't had that great a time since.....that Tulip Festival concert :D luv to all you listers Shawna =) (who has to join a 12 step program for chronic crossposting) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 18:54:55 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Re: Emm Gryner media stuff this week Hey, all... Did anyone get any of Emm's recent television or radio interviews on tape? I wasn't able to tape her CFNY interview, since I was at the studio at the time , but I'd realy like a copy if anyone has one. And I caught her on "Canada A.M." (she was great!), but haven't seen her on anything else. Please let me know if you managed to tape any of her recent appearances - - I'd be more than willing to work out a trade. Thanks, Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Jul 1998 19:02:29 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Re: Moxy!, the Hip, and OT Roxanne wrote: >Moxy Fruvous has a new fan! A question for Hip fans...has this >musical style ever been brought up in reviews of their work? That's interesting. It's very true, Gord has this voice that takes some getting used to, definitely. Like James said, he and the Hip are much more noted for their great lyrics and quirky, unique arrangements, but Gord truly does have a style all his own. I myself am also not a huge Hip fan, but I respect them a great deal and do enjoy their music a fair amount. >And just to redeem myself to Hip fans...I really do like "Poets" Moi aussi. And "Summerlong" - well, it's the perfect summer song! Every time I hear it on the radio, I just *have* to turn it all the way up! :) - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V1 #32 ***********************************
