Hi everyone,

i guess i should introduce myself since i'm kind of new to the list, i'm Gian (or John) and live near toronto (but not quite) :)

Well i'd just like to agree with james in saying RAF is an incredible band, i saw them at NxNE this year and it blew me away, as james said the lead singer just steals the show, very energetic and gets you that much more into the music.

Also, for Toronto folks on the list, the very talented, very cool, very
wierd  KINNIE STARR from Vancouver is playing at the Horseshoe tonight
(Friday).  She sings, she raps, she does amazing spoken word, and most of
all, she ENTERTAINS.  She wowed 'em on last year's "Scrappy Bitch Tour"
(Kinnie, the also ever-amazing Canuck singer-songwriter Veda Hille, and Oh
Susannah).  
Or if you want a double dose of raw, unfiltered Canuck talent, you could
see Kinnie with Sarah Slean at La Luna in Hamilton on Wednesday.  Not for
those with heart conditions or otherwise ailing and weak, please consult a
physician before undertaking this exercise.

That warning also goes for the RED AUTUMN FALL shows on Saturday that James
mentioned.  RED AUTUMN FALL must be capitalized (and if read aloud, should
be read in a deep booming voice preferably with an echo) because well,
small letters simply cannot contain the unbridled force that is SIMEON of
RED AUTUMN FALL.  There are two shows, one in the afternoon (at 1pm???) for
the young and young-at-heart (read: all ages), and one at night, at the
Rivoli on Saturday.  Don't miss RED AUTUMN FALL.  :-)

 On first listen to the new Emm Gryner disc, the first thing you're bound to
notice is how well done the album is. Sonically, the disc sounds great, it...
flows. This is probably due to Gryner's formal training. She studied recording
and production for two years. If anyone should know how to make a disc sound
good, it's Emm Gryner. 
 
The next thing you're bound to notice is how damn catchy the songs are.
There's a number of tunes that stick in your head, like the current single
Summerlong and Hello Aquarius. The addition of the London Session Orchestra on
a handful of tracks is a nice touch, adding a softer sound. 
 
All told, this is definitely an album put together by someone who knows what
she's doing. 
 
MOODY AND GREY  
Upon opening the CD's booklet, however, everything goes to hell. How could
something that sounds so great have such deep and distressing lyrics. The
light, effervescent sounding pop music, suddenly becomes very moody and grey,
like a British winter day. 
 
Songs like Hello Aquarius, when you get down to the lyrics, is a really hard
song. "The president thinks I'll never get there/Betty's glad she's got her
husband back/'Cause you can't be running round with little starlets". Images
of a drug clinic, Marilyn Monroe and Lewinsky-gate to predominate. 
 
The rest of the album is similarly peppered with non-niceties. Even the
current bouncy hit, Summerlong, features a couple of zingers you'll want to
remember next time you break up with someone. 
 
Even the song titles don't profess to hide anything. 'Death is a New Day', '89
Days in Alcatraz', 'The End', 'Acid'. A lot of dark imagery for this 22 year
old Forest, Ontario native. 
 
HANDY SOLO WORK  
For Public, Gryner did most of the work herself. While the disc was produced
by famed producer Warne Livesy, it's Gryner's playing you hear over most of
the disc. From the traditional instruments - guitar, bass, piano - to the more
exotic - harmonium, wurlitzer and hammond organ - there's a lot more of Emm
Gryner on this disc than most people think. 
 
There's going to be comparisons made - Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos (especially
for the acoustic piano number Acid). The difference is Gryner knows the ins
and outs of a studio. She's been writing songs since she was ten (by
comparison, McLachlan had never written a song until after getting a record
contract). 
 
This summer will mark trip number two for her on Sarah McLachlan's Lilith
Fair. After the exposure this disc gets her, it'll be interesting to see how
long the comparisons last. As she said in a recent interview, "everyone's
always getting compared to someone else. Sarah [McLachlan] was compared to
Joni Mitchell at the beginning." 
 
At least Gryner's in good company.
