Ok, he's not really the best singer. But that's not the appeal. He's a brilliant lyricist and a very talented performer. Its the show he crafts that's more interesting than his voice; the words, what he doesn't say, and what extra bits he adds to work the crowd. The Hip have said they see themselves as just a bar band, one gone awry, but a bar band nonetheless. > about half of the songs on the CD. It makes all the songs sound too much > alike. Mordecai Richler Robert Kroesch (my favourite Canadian poet and novellist) Michael Ondaatje Margaret Lawrence Alice Munro (who has marvelous short stories!; I heartily recommend _Dance_of_the_Happy_Shades_) Margaret Atwood Jane Urquart Leon Rooke (an adopted Guelphite; check out Shakespeare's Dog) Timothy Findley Hugh MacLennan Gabrielle Roy Morley Callaghan Alice Munro would give you the best feel for rural Canadian life, especially of the first half of the century and of rural areas close to urban centres. Look to Richler for the urban life, most especially of the Jewish sections of Montreal. Robert Kroesch for a more Western spin on things. Hugh MacLennan's _Two_Solitudes_ is a defining work for Canada itself; English-Canada and Quebec are said to have "two solitudes" (most Central Canadian politicians conveniently forget about the First Nations and the HUGE influx of slavic peoples into the prairies and the pacific rim influence on the West Coast, etc., etc.). I will let you in on a secret though, there is no Canadian way of life. The one that's most ascribed as being "Canadian" is a South-Central Ontario way of life. The Coasts share a lot in common, though the West Coast is still better off than the East. Ontario and Quebec share a great deal in terms of way of life, more than anglo- or francophone would care to admit or could see. The prairies too have a distinct feel and the North (above 60) is probably the most distinct. Quebec and Ontario by means of their population shape a lot of the opinions and perceptions of Canada. Holly McNarland, is a Canuck singer/songwriter now based in Vancouver. She's had some recent hits with Elmo and Numb and now U.F.O. is getting some airplay. She has and ep _Sour_Pie_, and a cd _Stuff_. I think I forgot to list some other Canadian movies... brain cramp... ...and YES Bruce McDonald directed (and starred in Hard Core Logo... my fav bit was with Benita Ha (ex of Street Cents) as Pipefitter's girlfriend, she was great! Other "Canadian" movies: Highway 61, Dance Me Outside, Roadkill, ... ok, how 'bout _anything_ by Bruce McDonald, ... the Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz,... Hugh Dillon is actually nicer than Joe "Dick" Mulgrew, but otherwise yeah. Its a great parody of the Canadian music scene, especially its Western elements. The drive across Canada for the tour, I'm betting is cobbled together from a number of real incidents. The band's naming convention is based-in part on D.O.A.'s that great, classic Canadian punk band. (If you're at the HCL site: http://www.hardcorelogo.ca poking around for a while will find a poster where HCL's opening band is Zambonie Driver... c.f. my favourite Guelph swing band: Zamboni Jiver...) The movie is riddled with CanMusic in jokes. Hardcore Logo, just to keep on the music topic, spawned (literally and figuratively) a HCL "tribute" album featuring: cub (for those who don't know, probably my all time favourite band; I very fondly recall falling down and sitting in the middle of the "pit" giggling while Lisa, Lisa and Robynn played "Killed by Death"... ...then they started giggling... *sigh* the good ol' days!), The Odds, Rusty, the Headstones (of course), Kinnie Starr (doing "Canadian Bush party" : ""You buy a two-four from your brother, then again you buy another, cuz you never know who won't show up with booze, And your best friend has a four-by, so you fill it up with ten guys, heading out for the big bush party after school.") Hard Core Logo; the best Canadian band that never existed :-) They also have fun rhyming off fake Canadian bands in the movie :-) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Jul 1998 13:04:37 -0400 From: envisage@totalconcept.com Subject: New List Member Hello, My name is Paul Marko and I'm new to the list - prompted by Jill D. who posted to the Jane Siberry List known as "Siblings" I reside in Buffalo, New York and can almost see the fine land of Fort Erie Canada from my office window. Anyway, aside from being a huge Siberry fan, I am also very into Canadian music - going way back to my punk days of following the Forgotton Rebels and Teenage Head. I became friends with Paul Hyde because of their (Payolas, Rock/Hyde) many area appearances (anyone know what Mr. Hyde is up to these days?). Because Buffalo is one of the main conduits of Canadian Music into the States, and because most descriminating music fans here listen to Canadian radio (our corporate, computer programmed stations are worse) - we generally get to see alot of Canadian acts - often! In fact, many acts prefer playing here than anywhere else. I also just recently helped the band Pollyannas play a few shows in town. They feature ex-members of Lowest of the Low, Weeping Tile and Crash Vegas. They have one 4-song demo CD out and are currently recording with John Switzer producing (Waltons, Jane Siberry, etc.) See them live - they are great (even using a Farfesia organ). Moxy Fruvous recently had 10,000 people for a free show. 54-40 sell-out everytime they perform. Ron Hawkins packs any bar he shows up at. The list goes on and on. Tomorrow, Great Big Sea performs for free as part of the "Thursday's in the Square" shows - so if anyone is close and is a fan... The bands I'm most into are Spirit of the West (who i run a fan page on http://duckwurks.com/sotw/sotw.html ) Great Big Sea The Punters MacKeel The Watchmen the Hip of course and lots more... I will be at Thursday at the Square tomorrow for Great Big Sea. I'll be wearing the Dogbert hat if you are looking for me. If some people want to meet up or something let me know... Finch" Subject: Holly McNarland, etc. I went back to the record store today at lunch (having this place right across the street is dangerous) and picked up that used Holly McNarland CD. It was "Stuff" and not the ep...not bad for $5. One guy smiled commented that I shouldn't be buying that because he had wanted to check it out but now he couldn't since I was buying it. The other guy turned to him and said, "Anybody who would perform inside a dog's mouth is cool with me." I love going to that store! I haven't really been able to listen to the CD since I'm at work but from what I've heard I like it. I can't wait to get it home or get it in the car so I can listen to it at volume where I can appreciate it. Thanks to James for the Canadian authors and movie references. Maybe if I finish my paper early enough this weekend I'll get a chance to see if the video store has any of these movies. Plus I need to do some research and see if I can get my hands on some books by these authors. I think I'll be checking out Alice Munro first. I'm just finishing up _Anna Karenina_ and after that I think I need to read some short stories if only to recover. Well I've strayed so I'll wrap this up. Plus I get to leave work early today in order to go to Lilith Fair. COAL is very strange, maybe like a countrified Rhea's Obsession or maybe Dead Can Dance singing Patsy Cline songs, but not really; ok, not at all, but that's the closest I can come. This is their second indie release in, like, forever! I first "discovered" them on a teeeeny Mint Records CD compilation called "The Mint is Still a Terrible Thing to Taste" (and then at the very first NxNE). cub and COAL do covers of Motorhead's "Killed by Death" and "Ace of Spades" respectively and Tankhog and Windwalker cover Ministry. Ok its strange, but its wonderful and very Canadian at the same time. There's a video for COAL's version of "Ace of Spades" that they play on Much from time to time...
