IF she does appear, it will probably be sometime between 9:30 and 11:00pm Eastern. It'll be on Undernet in the channel #sarahslean. Check the topic line, I'll post something on it as soon as I know what's going on. VERY brief instructions: 1. download an IRC client if you haven't got one (mIRC is recommended) 2. connect to any undernet server 3. type '/join #sarahslean' (without the quotes) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 98 16:26:43 EDT From: Allyson Widdis Subject: Re: watchmen James McGarry writes: > That's a track on Silent Radar, released earlier this year (March 31). > > For current Watchmen news check out: > > http://www.the-watchmen.com I believe that site is closed for "renovations" right now. Thanx to EVERYONE who send me suggestions on what to play on thurs! I'm pretty sure I'm gonna do Sarah and Dayna.....maybe tara if I decide at the last minute to change my mind (Gemini's have a tendency to do this :) For the poll results, most ppl picked Sarah and Tara...but maybe it's cuz the lists I sent to (lff, itw and canadian music) are very much focused on those artists.....I picked Dayna even tho she wasn't an overtop winner so I could educate the "audience" about someone new (last time I did Silence and a song of my own) but we'll see about the final decision, which will be made 30 seconds before I go on :) As a relatively unrelated question, just outta curiosity do either Dayna Manning or Tara MacLean smoke? I know it's a weird question but they have songs that mention cigarettes--Tara: Red, Dayna: Half a Man, My Kind--but especially as the amazing singers they are, it's really not something they should do.....but *shrug* for all know the mention of cigarettes in those songs prolly have nothing to do w/ them... luv Shawna =) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 1998 17:15:15 PDT From: "Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: I hereby declare this Emm Gryner Day! Hey, all... Well, today's the day wondermous local singer-songwriter Emm Gryner's debut major-label album, "Public", comes out, so I thought I'd hereby declare this day in her honor... ;) If you haven't heard her yet, you must listen to all the praise on FTE and Canadian-Music lately and rush out and get her album - she's amazing. I just got back from meeting Emm at local radio station CFNY. She was interviewed and did a great rendition of first single "Summerlong" on acoustic guitar. She remembered me from last year's Lilith, which was kinda cool , and we had a nice chat before and after her interview. She mentioned how great her Lilith dates were so far, and she's really excited to be touring with British great Bernard Butler next month. She's too cute - I had her sign her YM fashion spread, and she made this funny little embarrassed face when I brought it out. Amusingly enough, she was dressed like she'd stepped right from that shoot! :) It was so nice to see her at home again - there's always so much hype whenever a major-label debut comes out, but Emm's always the same, sweet, down-to-earth person despite it all. I've been listening to "Public" for a few days now, but didn't want to post about it until everyone got the chance to check it out. Like Jessica said, I'm also finding it a little strange after being used to "Leapyear" for so long, but I do love the new versions of the old songs, and also think the new songs, like "Acid" and "Summerlong", are amazing as well. - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Jul 1998 22:29:27 -0400 From: "Andrea " Subject: Re: Emm media stuff this week > 2:00pm CHRY (York U, Tor.) Finch" Subject: Moxy!, the Hip, and OT First off, forgive me if this post sounds weird...it's been a long day, yet I feel the need to post tonight rather than waiting until tomorrow :). Maybe it's because the boss will be in the office tomorrow and I'll be at Lilith Fair tomorrow night. Moxy Fruvous has a new fan! My copy of "Bargainville" arrived and I went and picked it up over lunch. Wow! These guys are great. Like the Barenaked Ladies, I think they defy caterogization, but they did remind me of some groups. The pop cultures references and the humour reminded me of BNL (I now see why people say if you like one the chances are good you'll like the other...however BNL is changing so that may not be as valid as it once was). The word play and again the humour reminded me a lot of They Might Be Giants. Their vocal harmonies reminded me of The Nylons. And there were a couple of guitar riffs that sounded Beatlesque to me. I'm less pleased with my purchase of The Tragically Hip's "Phantom Power." Whereas my appeal to Moxy was instantaneous, I can't say the same of the Hip. I've given PP quite a few listens and while I like it, I don't see myself playing the disc repeatedly or even making an effort to see a show. I think it's the lead singer's voice that I don't particularly like. On one listen I really made an effort to listen to all the different parts of the songs, I like the music, I like the lyrics, I just don't like his voice particularly. I think it's that funny intonation he *always* seems to be giving at the end of lines in a stanza. I'm sure most of you know exactly what I'm talking about. I just don't see him as a very talented singer (although this might be unfair considering how phenomonal Steven Page is--who btw, I didn't really like his voice at first either, it had to grow on me). It's like he knows he's not a very good singer and is trying to make up for it by using inflection in his voice on certain lines. I guess I wouldn't mind it so much if it wasn't so darn predictable. He does it on about half of the songs on the CD. It makes all the songs sound too much alike. A question for Hip fans...has this musical style ever been brought up in reviews of their work? And just to redeem myself to Hip fans...I really do like "Poets" :). I swear I've heard it before and since I know I haven't heard it around here, I'm guessing I've heard it on The Edge. A huge thank you to the people who posted that URL. I don't get to listen to it as much as I would like (the boss is a freak about keeping the office as absolutely quiet as possible when he's there, and when I'm at home the tv is usually on when I'm on the computer and the stereo usually wins out over my whimpy computer speakers), but so far I have really enjoyed it. I really wish I could listen to the morning show so I could 'transport' myself to the Toronto metro area. As I was running errands outside today in 110 degree heat (*with* high humidity), I soothed myself my transporting myself back to the last time I was in Canada...Montreal in December! But I digress. One off topic thing...well it's a Canadian type of question so I guess it's allowed. I'm looking for authors who closely identify with being Canadian. Kinda like Pat Conroy is to the South. His novels are based in the South with Southern characters dealing with all the Southern crap we're fed as we grow up here. His novels give you a real feel for what it feels like to be an educated Southerner. I'm looking for an author who will give me a 'real feel' for the Canadian way of life. I hope that's something someone can give me some leads on. I try to watch the bestseller lists in Maclean's but I'm way behind and they usually are the type of books I'm looking for anyway (just generic fiction/non-fiction, rather than regionally based). And to be even pickier I'm an East Coast gal...never cared much for the West Coast whether it be Canada or the U.S....I'm just provincial I guess ;-). Oh and where have I heard the name Holly McNarland (I think that's it). I saw a used CD at the store today for $5 and I know I've heard her name somewhere but I can't place where. Any ideas? Okay, off to bed for me! rox ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Roxanne Finch rdfinch@mindspring.com http://www.unc.edu/~roxfinch/ You get your Ph.D How happy you will be "Never Is Enough" When you get a job at Wendy's --BNL And are honoured with Employee of the Month ------------------------------ End of canadian-music-digest V1 #27 ***********************************
