I'll have to agree that BNL gets a lot more exposure in the US than Moxy does. BNL plays bigger venues, draws more fans nationwide, and is played on the radio a lot more frequently than Moxy is. I used to be a really big BNL and Moxy fan, but that's changed in the past few years. Both bands are very popular in this part of NY, and have no trouble selling out shows when they're in town. However, the last few BNL and Moxy shows I've attended where packed full of screaming teenagers. I've decided to never again attend a concert by either band because of the way the teen fans behave at these shows. I go to enjoy the music... not hear screaming kids and become squished. I can't speak as well for BNL shows (having only seen two, and likely not to see gobs more, as I too prefer small venues), but I can address the Fruvous bit: it really depends on the venue. The majority that they play are either 1) 18/19/21+ venues, which cuts down on the screaming teenybopper factor (believe me, there's always plenty of discussion on this matter on alt.music.moxy-fruvous, including a lot of disgruntlement from the younger fans there, who are angered that they're excluded and assert that they aren't screamers themselves), or 2) folk fests, which tends to draw a more thoughtful and appreciative audience. Unfortunately, upstate NY, from what I've seen (and yes, I've attended shows there myself; I've attended their shows in 10 states now, from Tennessee to Maine to New Jersey to Ohio) is indeed bad about being cram-packed with screamers. Possibly because they've been big there longer, and it's more of a trendy thing? If you venture to Canada, there seems to be a more nonchalant feeling presiding, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on just how much enthusiasm you like from your crowd. But let me encourage you, if you get a chance to see Fruvous elsewhere, take it: the show is just too good to let the audience spoil it for you. ceecee Colleen Campbell o/~ Fruphoria! o/~ ceecee@fruvous.com "Hope we're not too slick for you. . . Us older punks are too old to bop, pogo and mosh; yell, scream and generally make idiots out of ourselves. I was at a Mustard Plug/Flashlight/TJ's Kids gig last night and if it wasn't for the all-agers it'd've really been a crappy show. :-) Those kids rule, they made the bands feel welcome, the had fun and didn't do anything too stupid. :-) > 2) folk fests, which tends to draw a more thoughtful and appreciative > audience. I saw the Fruvs at Hillside a few years ago. Great folky crowd, appreciative, but mellow. The only bad experience I've ever had with teenybopper types was at Jewel's Danforth Music Hall gig. I swear if Jewel had swiped her nose people would've screamed, it was so bad at one point I couldn't hear anything at all! I have noticed that Canadians are a bit more down to earth when it comes to treating musicians like regular human beings. I've seen the mentality at US shows where the bands need to be protected because the fans idolize/obsess over them to the point where they can't go anywhere without being bothered or swamped. I have seen that Canadians are a bit more relaxed and reserved when meeting bands. At 10 she wrote her first song and at 21 she formed her own label Dead Daisy Records. She has two indie CD releases, unfortunately only one of which is generally available. Many of the songs off the second release _The_Original_Leap_Year_ make their way on to her debut major label release _Public_. (A tip from the Jewel list says to keep your eyes and ears open for a promo cassette sampler Mercury is shopping around called _Public_Speaking_ wherein Emm talks about some of the songs.) _The_Original_Leap_Year_, released in 1996 was Emm's first big release and while virtually ignored by the majors until recently, became a favourite of alot of influential people in Toronto's music scene. CFNY's Brother Bill recently remarked that TOLY had long been a favourite and music conspiracy theorists suppose it might have been music-journalist Janna Lynn White's love of Emm's music that tipped the scales for her Lilith appearances last year. Her new single "Summerlong", probably my favourite Emm song (though "The Good You Make" is close too!) is getting medium rotation on Toronto's CFNY 102.1. > where I am (I'm JUST BEYOND transmitter range for The Edge.. talk about > FRUSTRATING). http://edge.passport.ca James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 16:40:45 -0400 From: Steve I Subject: Re: I heard Emm :) At 03:25 PM 7/15/98 -0400, you wrote: >>I've heard the name Emm Gryner about 100 times in the past month, but have >>no idea as to who she is. Well, my info on him is a couple months old, but as far as I know he still doesn't have anything out. It's very sad. He hosted an amazing show at C'est What recently, a Tom Waits tribute that drew a rather stellar cast of guest performers, including three of the Moxy boys playing as "Chia Pet". Tory seems to have a lot of friends in the Toronto music scene! And there are some good bios in there, but just about as many bad ones (take it from someone who's done it - squeezing a band's entire history into less than 100 words like that is pretty damn hard) ... There are some *killer* band names in there, though. I mean, Zuul's Evil Disco?! LOL! Fabulous. - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Jul 1998 17:59:25 -0400 (EDT) From: "Yeah, I want some Cheesy Poofs!"
