["Tabassum Siddiqui" ] Re: canadian-music-digest V1 #18 ["Tabassum Siddiqui" Subject: Stardust Picnic 7/11 review... Hey, all... Well, here’s my Stardust Picnic report/review for the Saturday of the 2-day event... For those of you that don’t know, the Stardust Picnic is Blue Rodeo’s brainchild show, just like the Tragically Hip’s Another Roadside Attraction or Our Lady Peace’s new Summersault tour. BR invite the bands they like to jam with them for a weekend in Toronto at this old historic battle site, Fort York (last year was the first year for the show, and it was called the ‘Stardust Ball’), and this year they’re taking it on the road to a couple other cities as well. Anyhow, I went on the first day of the 2-day Toronto show, mainly to see the wonderful Sarah Slean perform on the second stage. It was a perfect, if rather uncomfortably warm summer day for a big outdoor show like this one, and I reached Fort York just as Sarah was slated to start. Unfortunately, I had to battle a pompous security guard at the media entrance before he finally let me in . But luckily, after I got my media pass and sprinted across the expanse of lawn to the other side of the venue to where the small, tented second stage was located, Sarah had just begun to play. There wasn’t much of a crowd gathered on the lawn in front of the small stage, unfortunately. It seemed most people were more interested in drinking their beer sprawled out on the lawn in front of the mainstage while waiting for the mainstagers to start. ;( Oh, well, their loss. I’d just settled onto the grass when Sarah spotted a familiar face and said hello to them, but I was very surprised when she turned in my direction and said cheerily, “Oh, hi! And you’re here, too!” :) I’ve only met her once or twice, the last time being when I interviewed her before her CD launch back in May, so it was really sweet of her to remember me. :) Anyhow, she played a gorgeous set as always, with the much-mentioned (and deservedly so) Kevin Fox backing her up on cello, and some nice percussion from her drummer (I forget his name). It was rather odd hearing Sarah’s melancholy tunes outside on a bright summer day - the atmosphere just seemed wrong somehow - but her set was amazing anyway. She played 2 new songs - one I think was called “Bonnie’s Song” (is that right, Steve?), and the other, which she ended with, is based on the tragic ending of the film “My Own Private Idaho”. Both new numbers were incredible, of course - I can’t wait until she releases some of this new material! Sarah got to play a little longer than her scheduled 20 minutes, because they were having some technical problems setting up the mainstage, which was more than fine by me! ;) Congratulated Sarah on a wonderful set after she was done and then made my way over to the crowded lawn to check out the mainstage. When they were finally ready to go, punk chick-turned-country siren Neko Case was first up on the mainstage. I wanted to check her out because I’d heard so much about her lately in the press, and she’s playing our Lilith Fair next month. But I’d been turned off her because I’d heard she was really old-school COUNTRY, and I’m not really into that at all. ;) But I have to say, she was quite impressive - the girl applies the punk ethos to country, and the result is this rollicking country-blues-rock hybrid delivered straight-up. True, the songs are very old-school country - in fact, at times you’d *swear* you were listening to Patsy Cline, and she even closed with an old Loretta Lynn song - but Loretta Lynn never rocked this hard. ;-) Most impressive are her vocals - man, she can sing! Rather twangy, but I got past that soon enough. Some of the songs sound a lot alike, but she switches between tempos enough so that you don’t get bored. Ran over to the second stage again to catch local folk-jazz-pop singer-songwriter Coco Love Alcorn (great name, eh?). Unfortunately, she only got to play an abbreviated set of 3 songs due to the delay on the mainstage (everything was running behind schedule). But she was pretty good - not particularly spectacular, IMHO, but solid nonetheless. She adds some jazz elements like scat singing to her songs, which is pretty neat (her dad’s a major jazz musician), but otherwise is pretty folky. One song, “Two-Dimensional Box Junkie” reminded me a bit of Ani DiFranco, and another, “Corporate Coffeeshop”, was rather amusing. I could see Coco playing on the Village Stage at Lilith. (Then again, why the hell isn’t Sarah Slean playing Lilith?!) Finally, even though I really had to go (prior commitments later in the evening), I stuck around for Ron Sexsmith’s set because I’d never seen him live. While I’m a big fan of his songwriting, his delivery always seemed a little too flat for me. But live, with the Rheostatics’ Tim Vesley on bass and Neko Case’s crackerjack drummer backing him up, Ron was great! He really should consider staying fully amped, ‘cause on the electric guitar tunes like “Nothing Good” and “Clown in Broad Daylight”, he was at his best. And the crowd was really into it, too - I had no idea that there were so many Ron Sexsmith fans out there - I don’t even know anyone that knows him, really (outside of the industry folks I know, that is)! And I was sitting right behind Ron’s wife and kids during his set, which was kinda cool. :) Since I had to leave the show early, I unfortunately had to miss the Cowboy Junkies, who I really wanted to see, having just gotten into their new album, and Blue Rodeo, of course, who were going to do a *2-hour* set ! Oh, well... Anyone else go to the show and catch them? Report, please! Anyhow, all in all, a great way to spend a nice summer day - outside listening to some great Canadian music! - - Tab :) ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 00:53:26 -0400 From: Steve I Subject: Moxy/Emm Tab typed: >But I >do know that, yes, at the height of their popularity they *did* have a >lot of young fans, but then again, that was to be expected - when a band >hits their peak of popularity it's often accompanied by that sort of >teenybopper adulation. I think the teenybopper element was much more prominent than for other popular bands. I've seen plenty of concerts by popular bands but nothing that approached the uniform teenybopperness of the Moxy show I described. The reason, as Colleen was getting at I think, is that the kind of music they write and play is the exactly the kind of music that really appeals to young fans. The 4-part harmonies, simple (and this is not a bad thing) hook-laden melodies, and so on are like ear candy and have special appeal for younger fans, to a much greater extent than other popular bands. As a supreme example of this sort of music that appeals to young fans, take the Spice Girls. Now don't get me wrong, this is not a bad thing. The way I see it any time a band can make its music work on many levels, so both kids and grownup kids can appreciate it, that's a real accomplishment. >LOL! Oh, dear. I arrived home from a week's vacation to find a big box of CDs I had ordered from A&B Sound (my favorite source of music next to Borders and IndiePool). Here's what was in it: Susan Aglukark - Christmas....I had hoped for a little more (Susan's voice sounds a tad flat sometimes), but this is a nice addition to my Christmas music collection. She sings in Inuit (?) on most of the songs. Holly Cole Trio - Christmas Blues....Why do I love her so much? I didn't even know this treasure existed until recently and am soooooo glad I found it -- even though it's only four tracks. A Canadian Brass Christmas.......haven't listened to this yet, but I know I'll love it. Count Your Blessings/Jane Siberry, Holly Cole, Rebecca Jenkins, Victoria Williams, Mary Margaret O'Hara.....Someone burned a copy of this for me, but I've always wanted a *real* copy of it......one of my very favorite Christmas albums! Sook-Yin Lee - Wigs 'N Guns......Where in the world did I ever get the idea I should buy this? All I can say is that Sook-Yin is......ummmm......different! The Beautiful South - Choke......This album made me think there are some deep, dark secrets in the lives of The Beautiful South......child abuse maybe? Sully - I Have Much To Report......I like this more than I thought I would. Would this be considered *ambient* music? Sara Craig - Miss Rocket......I've heard her name bantered around a bit and thought I'd take a chance. She's wonderful!!! I went back to the A&B Sound website and ordered three more of her albums! Laura Smith - It's a Personal Thing......Pleasant folky stuff.....reminded me of Dar Williams at times......or was that this next one......? Heather Bishop - Old New Borrowed Blue......More folky stuff......sometimes it's good enough to have just one cd from an artist.....at least until their music grows on you. ;-) The Housemartins - Now That's What I Call Quite Good.......Perfect for when you're in the mood for something fun and upbeat. Oh Susanna - self-titled.......Yes, I can imagine her at Lilith Fair. I expected this to be a little more pop instead of the strong folky *girl and a guitar* that it is. I also received a couple of tapes people had dubbed for me: Terri Hendrix......nice country stuff.....I have to check out her website....www.terrihendrix.com (thanks to Mike Fulcher) Happy Rhodes - Many Worlds Are Born Tonight.......This is soooooo wonderful! Thanks, Marty! It will tide me over until I can get my hands on the actual cd....Does anyone else think it sounds a little more *commercial* than some of her previous albums? Not that there's anything wrong with that. Final note: Has anyone ever ordered from an online company called New World? I just ordered Jane Siberry's obscure import cd, "Summer in the Yukon," Damhnait Doyle's "Shadows Wake Me" (I couldn't wait, tab!), Veda Hille's "Songs About People and Buildings," and Barbara Lynch's "Goodbye and Goodluck" from them and hope I don't have any problems. That's all for now. Jill :D ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 09:42:00 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: an A&B Sound extravaganza! I saw her at Hillside last yeear and she was doing a workshop with Oliver Schroer (and a couple o' the Stewed Tomatoes) and Valdy. Ok, big folk, but it was a more poppy upbeat folk. :-) James. ========================================================================== James McGarry | jmcgarry@UoGuelph.CA - -------------------------------------------------------------------------- An artist should be fit for the best society and keep out of it. - - John Ruskin ========================================================================== ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Jul 1998 12:28:15 -0500 (CDT) From: ~Mareesa Orth~ Subject: Paperboys and someone else Hi there :) My first post to this list...what a feeling! Well, no, actually Heather, Sarah's manager, did mention to me that she did talk to the Lilith folks about Sarah possibly playing, but I think it just didn't pan out in the end. They just have *tons* of people, obviously, that want to play Lilith, and in the end they can only choose so many people. For Toronto, Melanie Doane, I think, was an obvious choice, seeing as she has a record coming out in the Fall that her label (Sony) is really getting behind, but she's not really big enough to play the second stage. And it's also good to see local Lenni Jabour getting a slot, too. Although, does anyone know what's up with her these days?
