Oh well, better late than never! Roxanne typed: >Hi, I'm Roxanne. I'm new to the list. I usually lurk on a new list for Hi Roxanne, welcome to the list (says one newbie to another). :-) >Anyway, I went to the Saran Slean site that Steve posted about. I believe >I'll be ordering that CD sometime today :). If you haven't actually ordered it yet, it's available for ordering online at IndiePool, a distributor for independent Canadian artists. http://www.indiepool.com/ I urge you all to check it out! Otherwise you could ask me to send you a copy. >They had sound clips on the >site and I really liked what I heard and I'm eager to hear more. Actually James you should hear this stuff that Sarah's been working on with a friend... I'm trying to remember how it worked, I think she writes the skeleton of a song (lyrics and a basic melody I think) and gives it to him and he adds all this cool electronic stuff... the result is something very unlike any Slean stuff you've ever heard. >You HAVE to check out Tammy!!!! But Steve, I think you might know that I tend to prefer the more obscure Canadian artists.....especially females. When this list first started , I posted a big ol' long list of those artists. I'll repost it with comments when I get home, but it included Lenni Jabour, Andrea Florian, Melanie Doane, Sarah Slean, Kathryn Rose, Wendy Lands, and others. Oh, which reminds me....if anyone ever hears of Caroline Lavelle coming out with a new album, I want to hear about it. I LOVE her voice! "Turning Ground" is one of my favorite songs and I can't wait to hear more from her. (Her CD "Spirit" is one of my most frequently played albums.) Ok....enough rambling. Maybe it's all the college kids here with too much time on their hands :) I went to my local record store to find out if they could order Sarah Slean's CD and of course they couldn't. The website had an 800 number to order it so I'll either try that or the indiepool website. Thanks for the info! And be careful about offering to pick up anything Canadian for me Steve, I'll have you sending me monthly packages of Kraft peanut butter and Smarties! ;-) >BTW, where are all the fans of the higher profile canuck bands? Where are >all the Moist, Tea Party, Our Lady Peace, Barenaked Ladies, Tragically Hip >etc etc fans? Just curious! Well as for me I'm a *huge* Barenaked Ladies fan. I logged 2000 miles this winter on a trip following them around on their Christmas tour. And even though I had already pre-ordered the cd, when I found out a local store would be opening at midnight to see the new cd, I went on out. Now that's dedication. I'm a semi-fan of Tragically Hip. A Canadian friend sent me 'Day for Night' for Christmas one year and while I really liked it, it wasn't enough for me to spawn an interest in them like I did with BNL and Gordon. Keep the websites and references to good Canadian musicians coming. I'm eager to learn more about the Canadian music scene, which is of course is why I joined the list. that is all, you may move along now... rox ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ rdfinch@mindspring.com http://www.unc.edu/~roxfinch You get your Ph.D How happy you will be "Never is Enough" When you get a job at Wendy's --BNL And are honoured with Employee of the Month ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jul 1998 14:00:54 -0400 (EDT) From: James McGarry Subject: Re: Sarah Slean etc. On Fri, 10 Jul 1998, Roxanne D. Neat! I'm starting to get more into electronica myself, I have a friend who has been doing some peachy keen stuff in his home studio. I've also been turned on and tuned in to a non-Canuck band Air. Kinnie Star is playing Hillside again so I'll be in a chunkhop mood for a bit :-) (Though I did spend the morning fixing my bass; very non-electronica... ...blah!) > BTW, where are all the fans of the higher profile canuck bands? On another list we've been pondering the depth and breadth of the Canadian scene, and the dearth of exposure for the whole urban/hiphop scene. And yes as far as the Hip goes, _Road Apples_ is a classic album. It's one of them 'must have' albums for any fan of Canadian pop/rock... >theirs? Also, I'm interested any hearing Moxy Fruvous. I've heard so many >good things about them from other BNL fans, but I've never heard them. Any Us Canucks are not going to be very useful in answering this question I think. There aren't too many Canadians who own anything past their first album. There's a mysterious phenomenon that's occurred with both of these groups in that they both got way too big in Canada way too fast, and suddenly neither of these bands could sell albums in Canada after their first albums. I spoke with Jian from Moxy about it once and he said they could see it happening but just couldn't prevent it... the Moxy guys even tried calling the radio stations requesting them NOT to play their songs so much. But it was inexorable; people got sick of them, their images became synonymous with "teenyboppers" and "top-40" and that the beginning of the end for their Canadian market. I hadn't the heart to tell him that I was almost as bad as everyone else; all I have is their indie cassette and their first CD. Ah well. I went to one of their shows last night for the first time in about 3 or 4 years (although I did see them play a couple of songs in a surprise set at a Tom Waits tribute in a small club a few weeks ago). I'm happy to report that their shows are just as fun as ever. I'm glad to see that both of these bands are achieving success in the US, they deserve it. Jian had a theory that for Canadian audiences to really embrace a Canadian band, that band must first achieve success in the US first. I disagreed with him but he did have a point; as a whole Canucks didn't forgive Alanis Morissette her dance-queen past and accept her new alternative thing until she'd made it big in the US. So who knows? Maybe you americans will have to teach us Canucks how to like BNL and moxy again... If you can find their product BUY IT! They put on a fabulous show; mindblowing music, truly! Some of the best, most innovative material in a long time. I could only partially describe their magic by throughing a hodgepodge of various artists together. I wish they'd tour more outside of TO. I'm sure they'd meet with a great deal of success. > They had some clubs aimed at that scene at the festivals this year, but I > think they were mostly attended by the people hip (no pun intended) to that > scene already. They were, its getting better though. I'm trying to make inroads there in my own personal musical tastes, though the only one to really, really, really appeal in those genres has been Kinnie Star. Her 'Praise' is amazing live and the recorded version is so well done it really carries the 'live' feel. > deserve it. Jian had a theory that for Canadian audiences to really > embrace a Canadian band, that band must first achieve success in the US > first. I disagreed with him but he did have a point; as a whole Canucks I remember that conversation... ...my interjection was that we, as Canadians, often seem to dislike US success too. BNL got a lot of bad press in Canada (and, I might add very, undeservedly so!), I think as a direct result of their success in US markets. I never stopped liking BNL, I still keep Kraft Dinner on hand ;-) I think that's why we treasure the Hip so, they are a phenomenon in Canada, but drive a 100 miles across the border and... ...if they were to break the US market, ... ...I don't wanna think about that. :-| In some respects the Canmusic industry wants to shoot itself in the foot. > didn't forgive Alanis Morissette her dance-queen past and accept her new > alternative thing until she'd made it big in the US. So who knows? Maybe I'm thinking the US has similar troubles with Debbie Gibson's new roles... its a teen idol thing, maybe, more than cultural.
