I've seen Sarah perform twice myself -- at C'est What during Canadian Music week in March, and at the Reverb in May. I heard Steve Poltz was in town for Canadian Music Week and grabbed a pass. I then posted to Jewel/EDAs asking for recommendations. I knew like nothing about who to see. Well, I get a couple nice emails from James and Steve, and I found myself at the Horseshoe to see Dayna Manning, Roach Motel and the Wild Strawberries Thursday night. What was a really cool surprise, though, was hearing Sarah. I really liked her music -- she has a wonderful voice and is great on the keyboard. I did have a hard time hearing the lyrics with the band, though. Anyway, I picked up Universe next day (first time buying a tape in a while). When I went to the second show, I knew some of the songs, and that was really cool. :) As for the Tori comparisons, well, I'd never actually heard Tori. My roommate's a Tori fan, and I listened to one of his CDs. I can see where the comparisons come from, but I'm not musically technical enough to make any really specific ones. Last Sarah comment: there are two Sarahs (McLachlan and Slean) that are both female, Canadian singers, play piano and have songs called "Angel." Anyway, I hadn't really been to concerts before this year (weird, eh?), but I've been to a few so far: - - CMW (various): Steve Poltz, Sarah Slean, Dayna Manning, Wild Strawberries, Roach Motel, The Spy, and three others I can't remember - - C'est What, Toronto: Surface to Sound - - Marine Midland Arena, Buffalo: Sarah McLachlan - - Reverb, Toronto: Sarah Slean - - NXNE (Holy Joe's/Reverb), Toronto: Steve Poltz, Suzanne Willey, and bits of a couple other bands - - La Luna, Hamilton: Steve Poltz Since this _is_ Canadian Music, I should throw in my two cents about Steve Poltz. Yeah, he's basically from San Diego, but he was born in Halifax. If you haven't picked up One Left Shoe (Mercury), you should definitely give it a look. Steve's perhaps most famous for his work with Jewel (especially You Were Meant For Me), but he also led a SD-based band called The Rugburns for a quite a while, and he's great solo. I saw Kevin Fox a couple times...he seems pretty good. Though, I don't know much about cello music (he's the first I've heard).
