She's a Canadian singer/songwriter who has an album >called "Shakespearean Fish" -- among my favorites! I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that Jill is familiar with Melanie Doane. :-) Melanie's based in Toronto now but she's actually a transplanted Maritimer... sound familiar? I think she's from Cape Breton. Her music is heavily east-coast-folk influenced, especially the ones where she plays fiddle. The sweetness of her songs on her album belie the energy and power of her live shows. An example is a really mind-blowing version of the traditional folk song "She's Like the Swallow". She starts it very spare and acoustic, and gradually adds instruments until she's got the whole band playing it rock-style and she's wailing like a madwoman on the fiddle. Fantastic. I saw her on a triple bill a few years ago with Damnhait Doyle and Suzanne Little and Melanie completely stole the show. Those going to Lilith Fair in Boston, Ottawa, Toronto, or Buffalo should go early enough to see Melanie, she's a terrific live performer, her CD doesn't nearly do her justice. I wish she'd play a club show again... Anyway it's really a wierd coincidence that Jill should bring this up in the same digest that James and I talk about Dayna Manning and Kevin Fox, because both Melanie and Kevin play on Dayna's album, and Kevin co-wrote the first song on Melanie's album! If this were ecto it would be another wierd case of ectosynchronicity... I typed, re: Dayna Manning in Toronto: >> some inexplicable reason she didn't have Kevin Fox playing with her (cello >> and backing vox). I find him to be such an integral part of her shows that >> his absence is a palpable missing element when it occurs. Maybe that's why and James responded... >I've found this too, with the notable exception of her CBC performance on, >oh, geez louise... that cheese-ridden variety show, the one that had >Graham Greene... The reason you didn't miss Kevin in that performance was that he wasn't absent. :-) He did actually play with her then, although they didn't do a close-up on his face. He played guitar rather than cello for that show, which may have caused some confusion. I never noticed the first time I watched it, but I think Dayna's percussionist on that show was Creighton Doane, Melanie's brother (which upon reflection makes sense because both Doane siblings played on Dayna's album). I'm not sure though because the last time I saw him was playing with Melanie, and that was 2 years ago. >Is there a schedule for Taste of the Danforth yet? If so they haven't informed Sarah Slean's manager about it yet. By the way James knows as well as anyone that Sarah Slean is an immensely talented Canadian rising star that everyone should check out. She's a singer-songwriter-pianist who inevitably draws a raft of Tori Amos comparisons but should really be appreciated as an incredibly talented artist in her own right. She's gracing Blue Rodeo's Stardust Picnic on Saturday, and will be doing some opening gigs for another great Canadian band, the Waltons. *ALSO*, she is tentatively scheduled to open for one of the awesome Scrappy Bitches, Kinnie Starr. For dates and soundbites and so on visit Sarah's website: http://webhome.idirect.com/~nsounds/sarah/ Oh yeah. And Kevin plays with Sarah Slean too. Does the man have taste or what? :-) Seriously though, consider this: Kevin plays with Dayna Manning, Melanie Doane, and Emm Gryner; he could potentially become like a fixture on the Lilith Fair circuit... I usually lurk on a new list for longer than I have here to get more of a vibe of the group before I burst onto the scene. However, when I saw that Jill was on this list I knew it was a cool list ;-). Anyway, I went to the Saran Slean site that Steve posted about. I believe I'll be ordering that CD sometime today :). They had sound clips on the site and I really liked what I heard and I'm eager to hear more. Anybody know of any sites like that for these other artists? From the comments I've seen here I think I'm going to have to check out Melanie Doane as well. Me? Quick bio. I live in North Carolina. I work full time at UNC-Chapel Hill with Auxiliary Services General Administration. I'm a part time graduate student in Public Administration. And I'm a Canadiaphile :). I love all things Canadian. Where does this come from? Who knows. I do have a great uncle that lives in Ontario who used to bring me Canadian money whenever he would come to visit when I was a kid and I thought it was exotic because it was all different colors. I even have a subscription to Maclean's. If the opportunity arose for me to move to Canada (Toronto especially), I would in a heartbeat. And since this *is* a music list, what kind of music do I like...all sorts of stuff. I'm a huge Barenaked Ladies fan (so much so that I logged 2000 miles following them on their Christmas tour this past year). I like Sarah McLachlan, Shawn Colvin, Marcy Playground, Jill Sobule, Tori Amos, Tara Maclean and Natalie Merchant, among many others. Anyway, I'll get back to work now. I just wanted to say hi and that so far I'm really enjoying the list. rox ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ rdfinch@mindspring.com http://www.unc.edu/~roxfinch You get your Ph.D How happy you will be "Never is Enough" When you get a job at Wendy's --BNL And are honoured with Employee of the Month ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Jul 1998 08:55:30 EDT From: Riphug@aol.com Subject: Re: Dayna and Wild Strawbs! Usually, they're pretty folk-ish sounding, I think. But on this cd (Miles From Home or something like that), I swear that Margo Timmins sounds just like Roberta Carter on some of the tracks. Dayna's pretty good on tv, that little volley with Graham Greene was fun! > James knows as well as anyone that Sarah Slean is an immensely talented > Canadian rising star that everyone should check out. She's a "Slean Rulez" - Emm Gryner. :-) Sarah is the best thing to happen to piano-pop since Tori, but I've been thinking about this for a while now. I think we're wrong with the comparisons to Tori. I'm thinking now that the similarity in style has more to do with classical training than anything else, that and a firm religious upbringing. I do notice that both are moving away from the PianoGrrl motif and towards very distinctive styles of their own. > Seriously though, consider this: Kevin plays with Dayna Manning, Melanie > Doane, and Emm Gryner; he could potentially become like a fixture on the > Lilith Fair circuit...
