He won for "No Peace In Dying." If you look at the John Lennon Songwriting Contest web site: http://www.jlsc.com/winner.html ...you will see that this was no small accomplishment. Look what he won, I copied this from the site: "All Grand Prize Winners will receive $2,000 in cash, $5,000 worth of Yamaha Project Studio Equipment and a $5,000 advance on an EMI Music Publishing Contract."
