He definitely has a Dylan sound, but not so nasal. He's funny, and folkish, without being cheesy or sappy. Browsing through a local Tower, I came upon a book titled (I think) The Coulver Guide to Rock in the Nineties. I thumb through it, looking up my favorite artists, and as I begin to get more and more obscure, I decide to see if the book might possibly even have an entry for Brenda. And it did. I was quite excited to see her in some print media, but this excitement dimmed considerably when reading her excerpt. It started out by quoting the first line of her first album -- "I don't know nothin' bout singing the blues, I got no holes in my pockets, rips in my shoes, but I've got a heart, as heavy as a coal-trains caboose." The book really liked the line, and went on to say (I'm paraphrasing) the release was uneven but promising. I can deal with this; in fact, I agree. However, when starting to talk about "EiB", the book went way off-track. Calling it an album that sounds like a bunch of unfinished demos, it basically said that Brenda bit off more than she could chew and ended up sounding silly and incomplete. I say this is one of the classic albums released in the last decade, so I was disappointed with the review, since it was a quite complete book -- it had entries for Maggie Estep, Mary Lou Lord, and other artists I have trouble finding anything about. However, despite its mentioning of reviews as late as late 1996, it failed to even mention "Destination Anywhere", which with its stronger production the book probably would have liked more. So it really wasn't such a great book after all. Just thought I'd pass along. And... another question. Speaking of Maggie Estep, what does everyone think about her? Brenda thanked her in the liner notes of her first album, and I've been listening to her first album, "Not a Normal Girl", quite a bit. The album is very unmusical, but Estep is hilarious throughout with her ranting and raving. I love it. Anyway, I hear she has another album out now, too. - -- Mark A. There was nobody home." -- Rodney Dangerfield ******************************** ------------------------------ End of bklist-digest V1 #57 ***************************
