Many, many new shows. Most of these never develop into a full production, but based on the crowd reactions to the staged reading we attended this week of BULL DURHAM, Id say it will be one of the musicals that truly is headed for Broadway. Produced by casting director Laura Stanczyk (FOLLIES, LOMBARDI, the upcoming GLASS MENAGERIE) and Jack Viertel (Creative Director at Jujamcyn Theaters; A.D. of Encores!), the BULL DURHAM musical book by Ron Shelton stays close to the movie story, but he adds some new twists. The songs by Susan Werner really got the audience going, as did the dancing, which was choreographed by Joshua Bergasse. Kip Fagan (THE REVISIONIST) did the directing. Will Swenson (HAIR, PRISCILLA, MURDER BALLAD) played Crash Davis - the Kevin Costner part in the movie - and did the best work Ive seen him do to date. Hes worth the price of admission all by himself. Since his current show, MURDER BALLAD (click for my review), is closing, Wills on the lookout for new parts, and certainly has a winner in BULL DURHAM. "Life is an occasion. Rise to it!"
