I wrote a review (below) for our local sf_folk discussion list, after Susan's amazing February 7 show in Hollywood - rather than reinvent the wheel, I'll just reprint it here... Also, for the last four months I've been contributing to Star Maker Machine, a weekly-themed collaborative music blog (www.sixsongs.blogspot.com), having been invited to participate by Boyhowdy (Joshua) from Cover Lay Down (www.coverlaydown.com) - I thought you all would appreciate his insightful write-up of Susan's new recording... :-) http://coverlaydown.com/2009/02/susan-werner-classics-covers-of-marvin-gaye-paul-mccartney-simon-and-garfunkel-and-more/ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sent: Sun, 8 Feb 2009 3:36 pm Subject: last night (I Can't Be New - Susan Werner) Thanks so much to David and Leni Engels for coordinating the excellent Susan Werner show last night at St. John's Lutheran Church in Hollywood (great job on sound, Brett!) - lovely venue for an artist who has now made South Florida an annual stopover (thank goodness!)... Despite the song title in my subject line, Susan Werner is *always* new to me, even though I've seen her tens of times (at various festivals, conferences and house concerts) - easily segueing from singer-songwriter folk to torch cabaret to agnostic gospel... and now chamber-music classic rock, she (to paraphrase one of her lyrics) "never disappoints"... :-) Susan is not only talented but gracious... and gave the phenomenal Trina Hamlin lots of room and props for her accompaniment on harmonica, percussion and harmony vocals... even showcasing a few of Trina's own songs - the banter and camaraderie between is warm and fresh... It was a delight to finally hear the new song I've been reading so much about... The Night We Won the War, written about election night in Grant Park in Chicago, where Susan has resided for the last few years - a bit of googling pulled up the following lyrics, posted by Susan herself to a political discussion list: on the fourth of november, a warm southern breeze pushed the temperature up above sixty degrees and the leaves red and gold drifted down from the trees and saw history as they fell for we'd left home our overcoats, left home our gloves headed down to the park for some peace hope and love while the news helicopters all circled above on the night we won the war She made us laugh (Movie of My Life)... she made us cry (May I Suggest, on which David Engels and I had a mind meld, both of us conjuring Falcon Ridge during the "million stars that fill the turning sky at night" line)... she made us think (Why Is Your Heaven So Small) - I also love how she changes the lyric in Time Between Trains ("wonderin' why the fates above always route love through Miami") to another city when she plays here... this time to Toronto... :-) Thanks again to all - what a great way to spend a Southeastern Saturday Night! http://www.pixelopolis.com/lyrics/lyrics_song.php?site_id=1&song_id=66 Susan www.labyrinthcafe.com www.myspace.com/labyrinthcafe www.browardfolkclub.com www.southfloridafolkfest.com www.gotfolk.com "god bless the sound of music god bless the golden rule..." ~ Danny Schmidt HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V12 #6 ****************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
