In my humble opinion, Susan just keeps getting better and better with time. I picked a great show to bring my sis and bro-in-law to, both SW virgins, and now big fans - and now they know exactly what I've been raving about for 15 years! The show was billed 'wsg Trina Hamlin', which usually means that's the opening act. However, Trina did not perform her own set, but rather just came out with Susan, and played percussion, a smokin' hot harmonica, and added her smoky, divine harmonies. They opened with a new tune - a GREAT one, if you ask me. I thought it might be titled 'That's How it Happens', but which Susan then said 'might' be called 'Tumbleweeds'. Whatever you call it, it was great, and it was a treat to hear some new Suze. They then opened 'Lost My Religion' really slowly and bluesy, before they rocked the house with it. Susan announced that they would be doing another song she wrote; that in fact probably all the songs would be ones she wrote; that made them the 'Susan Werner tribute band'. She spoke of 'The Gospel Truth', about how Catholics are able to go to church on Saturday nights, that it 'counts', and so, we could all consider ourselves has having fulfilled our weekly church obligation simply by having attended this show. She now chooses to worship on Sunday mornings at the Church of St. Mattress - later someone suggested 'The Church of the Holy Comforter'. This monologue was followed by 'Forgiveness' , 'Sunday Mornings', and a raucous 'Probably Not'. She said that one was the 'flight risk' song, but that knowing the people of Ann Arbor, she figured people would get up and leave during the LAST verse. They talked of driving down from Traverse City (up north), and seeing all the 'things' on trucks - finally explaining they saw an inordinate number of dead deer tied to roofs and in backs of trucks. Yup, that's life in Northern Michigan in November, all right. Then all hell broke loose! She and Trina were joking about being a gospel band, causing them to launch into an impromtu 'Lord's Prayer' with a rock beat, which Susan seamlessly segued into 'Jesus is Just All Right With Me'...and then she did an over-the-top, emotionally charged, very hammy rendition of 'I Don't Know How to Love Him', with the audience singing along at top voice. One woman in the audience wa singing loudly, and Susan noticed...and then she asked 'what was the other popular song???' and decided it was 'Everything's Alright' - and the aforementioned woman was still singing, so Susan yelled 'Take it, sister!' and handed her the mike - and she (her name was Rita) sang a coupla verses. It was absolutely hilarious and spontaneous, and brought the house down. Then they settled down for 'Did Trouble Me'. Before doing 'Help Somebody, Susan showed off her new Icthus tambourine (in the shape of a fish), which she said she got at Guitars, Guns, and Gold, in Houston, TX last week. They closed the set with 'Help Somebody'. They opened the second set with 'Don't Work With Your Friends', followed by 'Time Between Trains', with Trina once again bringing down the house with her harmonica solo. Susan commandeered a woman's hat from the audience and was playing with it and trying it on, and Trina warned her that she was gonna get hot wearing it- to which Susan replied indignantly, 'I'm gonna GET hot???'. Too funny. She spoke of being from Iowa, went into her usual geography spiel, illustrating Michigan with her hand, and Cape Cod with her bent arm, describing Iowa as Jimmy Durante's profile, and that she was from the bridge of Jimmy Durante's nose. She spoke of being able to operate heavy farm machinery and that if anybody needed anything done, to see her after the show - 'that's not something every songwriter can offer you!'. All this led to 'Barbed Wire Boys', again with haunting harmonica accompaniment. I love how this song has evolved, from the CD/studio version. Then to the piano, for 'May I Suggest', and 'Movie of My Life', and 'Give Me Chicago'...the lyrics have been changed; 'circle' and 'Terkel' have been changed to 'music and drama, Barack Obama'. She followed this with a brand new song she'd finished on the drive down I-75 from Traverse City that day, perhaps called 'The Night We Won the War', a very stirring and emotional ballad about being in Grant Park for Obama's speech the night of the election. Trina then did 'Jacaranda', with Susan offering awesome piano accompaniment, after which Susan asked her to do another, and they TOTALLY rocked on 'Living on Love, with SW on guitar. Amazing. They closed the show with 'I Can't Be New', Trina offering a lovely brush percussion, SW on guitar. Immediate standing ovation, followed by the first encore, which was Barack Obama ('Get Happy'), SW claiming partial responsibility for his winning the election, and the lyrics changed from 'Hillary cannot sing' to something like setting the paradigm loose, and 'Sarah Palin shoots moose'. Second encore was 'All is Fair in Love', by Stevie Wonder, before which she referred to the new project, upon which this song would appear. So is it a collection of covers? Does anybody know?? As usual, it was a GREAT night. Both Susan and Trina were on fire, looking sharp, sounding great, and were obviously having an absolute blast. Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!!! Suzie T. I wish we had all been there! Does anybody have a decent recording of any recent performances? The Divine Miss W missed Portland this last year, and I'm feeling a little lonely for her aplomb.
