Indeed one can see the naif enthusiasm and hyperbole . I couldn't tell from browsing the school's website, but does Lehigh have a religious association? Just wondering because the entire article/review so focuses on religious aspects. And to me, while the album is drawn around religious concepts and faith, there is more depth to it - and the rest of Susan's music. Oh - and the "often critiqued as agnostic gospel". Am I misremembering, or didn't that quote originate with Suze herself? On to the surprise guesting. This past Friday, I attended a Keb'Mo concert at Chicago's Old Town School of Folk Music. (I had heard him before reading mentions of him via this list - I think starting with SW at McCabe's) He was, unsurprisingly, performing solo - but there was a 2nd microphone on stage. About halfway through, he started a comment about the OTSFM's anniversary and music in Chicago and segued it into Chicago musicians and then called SW to join him for a song. It was "One Friend". She contributed great guitar work and both the strong Susan voice on a verse and the soft SW voice on choral harmonies. They had great chemistry. At the end of the show, he called her down from the audience/balcony to join him on the closing song. This time a chance not only for some Susan slide guitar - with joking to Keb'Mo about learning from him to use less notes - but also some of her trademark facial contortions . Sorry, I'm not familiar enough with his oeuvre to have the title. Considering that I see her less in Chicago since she moved her (and tends to play those high-end gigs like the Auditorium Theatre/cabaret one or the not-quite-Chicago venues that car-less folks can't get to), it was quite a treat to get a tad of Susan. Added a lot to an already-enjoyable evening. (If you haven't seen/heard Keb'Mo, do take a listen. Not your expected, traditional blues) Regards, Carolyn Andre - --- candre@house-of-music.com Chicago, IL / USA Support Independent Music! If I remember correctly, she'd been considering a blues project before the Gospel Truth took hold. If anybody could tour as 'Susan Werner - The Musical', she could.....but thus far I've not heard any mention of her actually performing anything along those lines. She's only mentioned it in interviews; has anybody heard more than that? Has she done a new song and hinted that it is from/for the musical in progress? Seems to me that working solo in your genre of choice has got to be more straightforward than writing music for a show, what with the added requirements of characters, plot and setting, not to mention the addition of another person(s) to the mix in the form of the author of the 'book'. The bluesy stuff seems to be emerging more and more (new tunes in Lowell and performing with Keb Mo at OTSFM). So what do y'all think will be the flavor of the next official release? Hey, maybe it'll be a musical about the blues!! It's great to read about Susan sightings - keep 'em coming!!
