More people than care to admit, will sit in church and not really be inspired. It takes a "wanting" to go to church. Many people I know will go to the same kind of church they were raised in, rather than truly seeking out one that is effortless to attend. Oh, Ron, many "church people" ... in fact most spiritual persons with whom I've spoken, clergy and non- alike, think that questioning one's own religious beliefs is both a natural and good thing. Discernment often comes from questioning. Sorry to all but I'm finding it increasingly difficult to find time to read believers messages, let alone post. Nevertheless, I'm happy to say that I'm finally making time to tell you all a bit about Susan's 3/30 show in Rockford, IL. Tracy Wells and I had exchanged e-mail beforehand and I was looking forward to meeting her and her friend Toby after their long trek in from Omaha. It was indeed a pleasure, and I was happy to have the two of them join my mom, my pop and me at our table. (If Tracy has posted about the show, I have not read her post yet so please forgive me if I repeat her.) The show was the first of the Coronado Theater's concerts where not only the performers but also the audience were seated on the stage. It was a rather intimate evening and the audience skewed older and more conservative in my opinion than at several of SW's other gigs I've attended. The management of the theater had impressed upon Susan their desire that her concert be in the cabaret vein, concentrating more on music from ICBN than on that than on songs from GT, the "agnostic gospel" music she has recorded most recently. That said, I think Susan put on a great show, as usual. SW kicked off the gig with Unread Book, following it with Don't Work with Your Friends, after which she introduced (her friend with whom she was working, as my mom pointed out to me) Greg Holt on bass. After beginning the show accompanying herself on the Steinway, she switched to guitar to sing Let's Regret This in Advance, No One Needs to Know, Stay on Your Side of Town and Give Me Chicago Any Day (with an abbreviated improvised ending, compared to what I've heard her do with that number in the past). After chatting with us for a while, Susan sang Philanthropy, You Come Through and finished up the first set with I Can't Be New. During the intermission, my mom introduced us to a fellow concertgoer, a woman with whom she had been in an art class recently. I did my best to maintain my composure when the woman told us all that her husband really liked Susan but that she could "take her or leave her." After the woman had walked away, I busted out laughing. I was able to spend some time chatting with Tracy and Toby before Susan and Greg came back onstage and performed Time Between Trains, Big Car, Standing in My Own Way, Barbed Wire Boys, May I Suggest and Movie of My Life before talking a bit about the new CD and then launching into Why Is Your Heaven So Small, I Will Have My Portion and the new Our Father. Susan encored with Wouldn't It Be Loverly and La Vie en Rose. I had hoped she would sing both encores, especially the latter. When she started playing her guitar on thge final number I feared she would sing something else but was pleasantly surprised to find out I was wrong. The next day was great when Kellie Lin Knott and her friend Heidi joined Tracy, Toby and me for lunch in Rockford before continuing on to Susan's 3/31 gig in Chicago (and before Tracy and Toby headed back to Omaha and I made the much shorter trk back to Milwaukee). After lunch, the five of us sojourned to Belvidere (albeit mistakenly) before taking photos in front of a Rockford establishment Susan had mentioned by name the evening before. (Tracy, will you please send me the pics? Thanks!) Sorry if this was boring. I probably would have remembered more details had I posted sooner or taken more copious notes at the gig, but I hope at least some of you found something worth taking the time to read in this post. Wells" Subject: Re: Church People ... and 3/30 That would be the "Golden Touch Health Spa" ;o) HAHAH. Apparently Susan said in the show that she had been 'threatening' for years to go in to this "establishment" and she had finally done it on her last visit to town... She's like, "so i went in... and I didn't know what to say, so I was like, "um, is Richard here?" and they were like, "um, no, we haven't seen a Richard." and so I was like, "ok, well, uh, you tell Richard I'm looking for him." And then I walked out." So at lunch, Kellie, Heidi, Chuck, Toby and I decided we should all go take a picture in front of the Golden Touch. Witness exhibit A: http://www.tjammas.com/photos/swrockford33007/swrockford33007-Pages/ Image10.html And the little trip to Belvidere was due to me thinking I knew where we were going when, in fact, I did NOT. (LOL. Picture me leading this caravan of 3 cars down the road until I realized I had no idea where we were, and they're all following me like good little sheep. Haha. Once I got turned around and got my bearings, though, i got us there with no more incidents. ;o) It was a great trip, all in all!!!! :o) :o) A little insane (driving 6 + hours both ways from omaha) but fun nonetheless. Toby (the lady from my church who went with me) kept saying, "I can't believe we're doing this. This is INSANE!" LOL. But she loved it. And said Susan's show was totally worth it. (She'd never seen Susan in concert before; I've been sharing the new CD at church and Toby was like TOTALLY obsessed with it, so I was like "hey wanna take a road trip with me to see her in concert??" and the rest is history... :o) On Apr 7, 2007, at 11:16 PM, meredith wrote: > Hi, > > Chuck Ellingson wrote: >> After lunch, the five of us sojourned to Belvidere (albeit >> mistakenly) before taking photos in front of a Rockford >> establishment Susan had mentioned by name the evening before. >> (Tracy, will you please send me the pics? I mentioned to Tracy, Toby, Kellie and Heidi that I thought that one by one they should go into the establishment, ask for a job application and ask for Richard (as Susan had said she did). Then afterward I would go in and say that I was Richard and ask if there were any messages for me. While we were in the diminutive parking lot of the Golden Touch Health Spa, a slightly elderly woman stuck her head out the door to see what we were doing. Busted! My plans were ruined! LOL So we took pix in front of the place and then, feeling my oats, I went in and asked for Richard myself. There were two slightly elderly women in the (seemingly seedy) lobby who told me that there was no Richard there. (Go figure!) Since the link Tracy provided didn't work for me, I'm posting the following links.
