First, it was great having the show start at 11 on a Wed. night since I got a free parking space on the street in Harvard Square about 50 yards from the club. Susan and the singers were warming up on the stage when I got there about 10:30 and then they left and came back on at 11. The club is very small but it still seemed 2/3 empty since there were only about 20 to 25 of us there. It felt like we were a fortunate few having the privilege to be part of the beginning of her new tour. It was VERY casual with lots of interplay between Susan and the band as well as us listeners. Greg Holt played his upright bass and the backup singers were Colleen Sexton and Trina Hamlin! Trina played a lot of harmonica and beat a drum on occasion and Colleen used a little egg-shaped shaker or tambourine sometimes. Colleen left the stage for a while so it was just the three of them for a few songs. The music was extraordinary. I've never heard Susan sound better and the accompanying music was great. As most of you know, the new songs are terrific and they sounded great live. There were a few extended jams with Susan saying "do that again!" a few times after Greg or Trina had played something., She was REALLY enjoying it. At one point she had Trina play a certain note on the harmonica over and over again as she sat there playing her guitar, leaning back laughing and almost convulsing with joy. If anyone wants to seduce Susan, I would recommend using that note at some point in your attempt. ;-) I didn't write down a setlist but some of my highlights are below. The details may or may not be factually correct, but here's how I remember them: The person introducing them simply said "Ladies and gentlemen... Barbie." I have seen Susan perform over a dozen times but have never seen her with a band so as soon as they started playing, I was thrilled with the sounds coming from the stage. I love seeing Susan play and sing alone but the bass added depth to the songs and Colleen and Trina's voices added even more beauty to the vocals. It was especially beautiful on the gospelly songs. After playing "I Will Have My Portion", she commented on how fortunate she was to be playing with such a great band saying "I will have my portion, indeed!" Playing a bluesy intro on her guitar making her incredible scrunchy faces as she got into it and stopping mid-face waiting for Mosh to take her picture. It took him a while to realize what she wanted so she was making the face for quite a while. Cracked me up. The commitment with which she played the new songs. They are clearly important to her. One of the first things she said to us was that she felt someone had to deliver the message of "the gospel from the left". She proclaimed that she is now an evangelical agnostic. :-) "Standing in My Own Way" was a particularly energetic treat. I love the energy with which she sings this song. Susan made up quite a few funny rhymes about some towns surrounding Boston during "I'll Take Chicago". She made quite a few funny comments between songs, mostly around the religion theme but I don't want to repeat any of them here so if/when she says them again, people will enjoy them more if they haven't read about them first. Susan and the band were having a blast and enjoying each other throughout the show. Lots of smiling and laughing. Before her last song of the set, she said they would do one more so, when it ended, we all clapped and cheered for a while but since it was supposed to be a sort of rehearsal show, I felt like we shouldn't expect an encore and the clapping died down. Susan started yelling "Don't stop - keep clapping!" and they came back on for an encore. She said "We can't come back for an encore if you don't ask us!" It was pretty funny. As always, Susan was very gracious spending time with all of us after the show. It's always a pleasure to talk with her. She's so genuine and of course she's "wicked smaht". :-) Great to see you again Mosh and to meet you Nicky! Hope to see you again next time. All in all, it was one of my favorite times seeing Susan and I can't wait to see the entire show! Don't miss it. Don't forget to help somebody.
