Hi Bob et al, I'll be seeing Susan Friday night in Des Moines, IA... so expect a full report from me after that show!! I'm really excited to hear more of the new stuff!!!! Ok, "excited" is like, probably the understatement of the year. More like "foaming at the mouth." ROFL, I'm such a dork. :o) Tracy (in Omaha, Nebraska) P.S. Man, when did you hear "probably not" at Falcon Ridge?? I was there and I thought I caught like, EVERY single performance Susan gave during in the festival and I don't remember hearing it... (I've heard others on this list mention the song, but I've never heard it... yet. ;o) .................................................................. Bob reply's: Hi Tracy. I heard "Probably Not" during one of the "workshop stage" thing-ies that they like to do during the day at Falcon Ridge. Can't remember which one. Susan was on the stage with other singer-songwriters - and they were taking turns singing songs. I was "down the block" at the "Outpost In The Burbs" booth - but I managed to sneak away when I heard Susan singing. I don't think I heard the whole song. But I remember that part of it is structured in a sorta "question-and-answer" call-and-response format. To some extent the question was "Is there a God out there?" - and the answer was "Probably Not". Now this is from memory - so I probably have it partly wrong. And it was not nearly as obnoxious a song as it might sound. ( Susan is never obnoxious ). Still - in referring to this project I think I recall hearing Susan use the word "agnostic". Wasn't there a joke she was making? That she was an "evangelical agnostic" or something like that? I will be very interested to hear all the songs on the CD in their final form. I think it is a very interesting idea for a concept album - but I have a bit of concern that it might cause Susan some problems. Devoutly religious people sometimes get very angry at people who criticize religion in any way. I have heard people say out loud things like "We oughta hang all them atheists". And people who say stuff like that don't make a real big distinction between an atheist and an agnostic and a person who is not religious but has a private "spirituality" ( I heard Dolly Parton describe herself this way once ). If Susan were somehow to fly up into the radar ( she is under the radar right now) - I have some concern that mean people might say mean things to her - as in "Burn in Hell folk music girl!" She already said at least one couple who had paid money to see her ( hence - fans ) GOT UP AND LEFT when she played "My Strange Nation" - which - to me anyway - is a funny and cleaver and very patriotic song. I worry that some people might not react well to songs like "Probably Not". On the other hand - it'd be really cool to turn on the TV one day and see Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson throwing Susan Werner Cds into a bonfire. And then Susan could tour with the "Dixie Chicks". Guess we'll see. Hope the "Americana" radio stations will play it at least. A "set list" from Susan's show in Iowa would be great. I would especially like to know if "the mysterious beautiful song about death" - which I have only heard twice - made it on the record - and what the song is called. bye... Ukiah (haiku spelled backwards) is a rather small town. Well, at least it was during those years as I migrated from Los Angeles to northern CA, across Oregon and on to Seattle. Ukiah has probably become connected to Santa Rosa, which is connected to Petaluma (afternoons, anyone?), which is connected to that posh community just north of the Golden Gate, which is of course just a few mile away from the town that is just north of Santa Cruz, which is practically next door to Monterrey. Since Ukiah has only one state in between where I live in Seattle and where it is in northern California, I might go see Susan perform there. I have fond memories of Ukiah, and of several wineries in that lovely Anderson valley. Hey, since I'll be that close, I might even get some pea soup a couple mile down the road in Buellton, on my way to McCabe's! Gee, sometimes I forget how easy it is to just up and cross state lines. How rong of me! I mean, there's only three states on this coast!! It's practically nothing! So many artists neglect to come to Seattle when coming to the northwest (like San Francisco) that I've got to get off my butt and travel a little bit more. okay, I apologize for the rant. I hope at least Ron got my point. I'm sure someone else didn't. about Susan, how refreshing to have an artist release an album that doesn't sound like a rehash of her last release. my soul's not at war anymore, (I promise) John in the Pacific Northwest (we have power but there is still a downed Doug Fir in my yard!)
