It takes a lot to make the pretentious waitstaff at joes pub to stand still....susie werner made it happen. she aslo played the manhattan phone book with snare drumsticks... i told her it reminded of those old nina simone records.... you hear the shhhhh shhhhh shhhhh of the drums under her vocals...and i think that susan is as close to nina simone as one can get.... just listen to her vocals, piano skills and lyrics....only susan is from Iowa and Nina was from NC.... i saw Terese and woj and meredith and jim and ofcourse the mayor and greatest of all susan werner fans. if you have seen susan anywhere on the continent, you have seen my friend george in the audience. george and his lovely wife, also and no coincidently named susan was in the audience... i also saw cliff and john platt and his wife sheila, not named susan... susan was at one of her best.... i have to say that the second show was better... just when i thought that susan could not top herself, she did on saturday... saturday she played a church, (dont all church basements that have folk shows all look alike... the all have coffee and cookies for sale and ofcourse are all staffed by wonderful volunteers - the opener was a guy named rolf strum - rolf plays a mean guitar and plays only instrumentals. to quote susan, she was told that you can learn alot about a guy when you play with him, well she learned alot about rolf. he was great as her accompanist as she could keep up with him on guitar and piano but as a solo...i am afraid he was hard to stick with. his appearance also interfered with my ability to listen to him.. http://www.waterstreetmusic.org/rsbio.html so then the main act, susan werner in jeans and boots and a simple shirt over a tank.. the best outfit actually of all... she played... susan left the phonebook in manhattan and played her butt off.. she played more new songs... let me explain the new SW songs... in her words they are about religion and doubt.... the are definately revealing her personal search... there was a song about needing to be somewhere on sunday morning that has memories of her IOWA church going days as a kid in the middle... it is brilliant.. susan's new music is about her religious identity and fitting in where she is not accepted .... women are not allowed to be priests, though the pope had to be alerted that he could have been a girl...sings susan... the songs have a gospel sound to them... there are about 5 or 6 of these types of songs... and they will be played this summer...i am sure or as we know with ms werner... they can be abandoned when she works this thru.... HOW many SW songs have never been recorded... i actually love this song cycle and hope that susan writes more of them... she played different songs and ended with Help, another prayer song as she called it. she sang a emily dickinson poem set to music by one of her music and voice students... so if anyone sees robert boyce who was a student of susan she is looking for him.... i could go on and on... thanks to george for driving and thanks to his GPS for getting us around the GWB traffic .... or i would still be in traffic ..... sharon G - -- This year April had a blizzard Just to show she did not care And the new dead leaves They made the trees look like children with gray hair But I'll push myself up through the dirt And shake my petals free I'm resolved to being born And so resigned to bravery _dar williams ___________________ "sage advisor, does weary mean wiser?" dar williams HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 May 2006 18:51:32 -0400 From: "Sharon G" Subject: emily dickinson sonnet emily dickinson sonnet that susan's student set to music Nature Sonnet SOME keep the Sabbath going to church; I keep it staying at home, With a bobolink for a chorister, And an orchard for a dome. She is planning an album of them much like the way I Can't Be New is a themed album. Or at least, that's what she said on the phone Saturday. I'm working on getting that interview posted soon. Text only, though. She blew out her voice at the Joe's Pub shows on Friday and did not want the conversation recorded for public consumption. :) Anna On 5/22/06, Sharon G wrote: > the songs have a gospel sound to them... there are about 5 or 6 of > these types of songs... and they will be played this summer...i am > sure or as we know with ms werner... they can be abandoned when she > works this thru....
