It was always my opinion that the importance of this line was not to nose into anyone's personal life, but to underscore the meaning of the song. It does seem a little strange (by today's standards) that a political party not generally known for its acceptance of those "different" (not white, straight, Christian males) was responsible for "freeing the slaves". Again, an entirely new debate could be opened to argue who did what and for what reasons, but for the quick answer, Lincoln was the man who did it. It is equally strange that the man who did this may have possessed a characteristic that, on the whole, is not supported by his own political party. Oops. I didn't mean to imply that the line in the song was inappropriate. I just think that a discussion about the private lives of public figures is not the best use of our mental power. :-) Every body knows way too much about Bill Clinton's private life, and JFK's, but no one talks much about Richard Nixon's long time mistress. Maybe that's just too hard a thought to wrap the mind around, I don't know. These bits of personal insight are interesting, compelling in a way. We will never get to know the great historical figures, and can only speculate on what their personalities may have been like. I love history. I hated it as a child, but as the years move sprightly along, history becomes more interesting, and somehow more meaningful. So, perhaps my comment was totally out of line. Perhaps having an on-line discussion about Lincoln's or Nixon's sexuality is a better use of time after all, than say, discussing Brittany's driving negligence, or the improper referee-ing of the last Superbowl. Actually - at one time in history between Lincoln and WWI - the values of each party migrated to the other. Back in the days of Lincoln, it was the Democrats that were interested in status quo, keeping the public (and especially minorities) repressed, looking out for the rich landowners, not the poor. I first saw Susan at her Private Music private record label party at the Tin Angel. I have been amusician since I was ten years old, and I heard a lot of music. I was an invited tag-along as I didn't have any promotional capabilities of my own aside from opening up my bedroom window and shouting loudly to all the neighbors, "Hey! Check out Susan Werner!" That kind of medium may attract blue meanies, so I can;t say that I helped very much. She entered the stage that night and nailed me with "St. Mary's of regret." I don't know how this works, but, I did receive a message from Steve Murphy, who thinks that we should discuss Lincoln's sexuality. Well, I don't know the man, but I spend his money. My viewpoint? Well, masturbation is by definition a homosexual act. I'll leave it at that... But folks, I spent August touring Liverpool with John Lennon's sister, Julia Baird. I made a DVD. Whoop! On politics, well? We're in a big mess, and many of us are deluded about the reality that we are spent 8 trillion in debt, foreign interests own 45% of that debt, and hubris is the word of the day.
