And Mr. Gorka gave a star performance. The New Jersey-born folksinger has been touring for a couple of decades, never quite making it big but carving out a reputation as a thoughtful and varied songwriter backed by solid guitar and a voice that sounds just rough enough. In person, he was a delight, pulling off a set that made a virtue of its formlessness. Mr. Gorka said he used to write a set list before going on stage but gave it up because it made his shows too polished. Nobody would call his act too polished now, but there was rhythm and a certain joy to it all, from ballads to humorous songs, picking up a request from the audience here and playing a new song there - at one point, a song so new that he pulled the lyrics out of a briefcase before trying to wing it. Good as he was, Ms. Werner was even better, showcasing a deep and diverse talent. Her songs at times paid tribute to great songwriters of the past, but they were all indubitably her own, from the poignant I Cant Be New and Lets Regret This in Advance to the hilarious When They Make the Movie of My Life and to the daring Strange Nation. And that was just the songwriting. As a performer, she was equally winning. She played piano gracefully, sang wonderfully and accompanied herself on guitar. And her chat with the audience was just as funny and even more engaging than Mr. Gorkas. Toward the end, she even sang backup to Mr. Gorka on a couple of songs. It was a wonderful, winning performance, and she richly deserved the standing ovation the Alberta Bair crowd awarded her.
