Yeah, I'm almost 50, and into folk/acoustic, but I still love to crank it up on occasion.... Dave Grohl and the boys get into screaming a bit too much, but they do some great, driving stuff, with tasty guitar work and catchy riffs... and I've seen them a couple times at the (sadly now gone) Bronco Bowl, a bowling alley with a very cool 3000-seat arena in the back that is now a freakin' Home Depot, and they were really good shows. Last night, they were to be playing at the Smirnoff Starplex, an outdoor concert arena with an open-air roof over seats, plus a high sloping "lawn seating" area in the back, complete with big screen projection screens at the edge of the roofed area for those on the lawn, that, while certainly not high-def, are still decent enough after it gets dark. In addition, the opening act was to be Weezer, another group that I've heard good things about, but have never seen before. SO, I bought two lawn seating tickets for Terrie and myself a couple months ago, through the special 'foo fighters mailing list pre-sale" announcement -- $30 face, with a $7.50 "convenience charge" and about $2.50 in other such nonsense, for an $80 tab, and anticipated a pleasant, rockin' evening with mah woman (as opposed to other types of "pleasant, rockin' evenings with her, natcherally!)... A couple days ago, the weather forecast started calling for rain on the day of the concert... I wasn't too concerned, thinking that we might still go out, wearing ponchos and sitting on plastic or something... I knew they didn't allow lawn chairs to be carried in. And yea, verily, the rains did come around 2PM yesterday -- hard rains, too -- but I had my plastic sheeting and ponchos in the car, and Terrie had a sleeping bag and pillows in her car. The concert had a listed start time of 5:30 -- well, I couldn't get out of the office by then, so I was planning to blow off Weezer, and just catch the Foos... The rain stopped around 6PM, and I started having second thoughts about even going... So Terrie and I met at a restaurant and ate dinner, and talked about whether to go or not -- but the sky appeared to be clearing, so we decided, OK, what the heck, let's go! We arrived at the backed-up traffic line for parking around 7:30... and got to the entrance gate, and were told "$15 for parking, please..." "FIFTEEN DOLLARS????!!!!????" "Yes, $15..." We paid, grumbling, because I remember it being $5 to $7 about two years ago for Peter Gabriel... About 100 feet into the lot, we found a narrow spot -- narrow, because someone in a brand new Kia (A KIA, not a MERCEDES) had parked intentionally offcenter taking up a space and a third!!! So, wanting both to have proximity to the gate and also to piss off the Kia owner a bit, I got out, grabbed the stuff out of the back seat, and Terrie squeezed the car into the space... possibly dinging the Kia's door as she got out (hee, hee... is it so wrong?). After parking, we grabbed the plastic, ponchos, sleeping bag, and pillows, and headed toward the entry gates -- where the line of people waiting to get in stretched for about 100 yards down the sidewalk!!!! Apparently, they had delayed the start of the concert, due to the rain... So, we walked to the back of the line. As we continued to pass people, I noticed that NOBODY was carrying blankets or sleeping bags -- and I thought, "Surely we're not the only ones with lawn tickets...." As we stood in line, inching forward slowly, a couple girls passed us walking toward the back of the line. One paused, and said to me, "They won't let you take that stuff in, you know..." "The blankets?" "Yeah" "You're joking, the grass is soaked..." "I know, but they won't..." I thanked her, but decided to check with the official security people once we got to the entrance... And 10 minutes later, I was having a semi-polite conversation with a Smirnoff security guard, that went kinda like this: "You can't take that stuff in, sir...." "Uh, we can't take blankets or plastic sheeting in, for lawn seating?" "No, sir, they're not allowed... you can hang your stuff over the fance here, and come back for them later, or take them back to your car." "Fer chrissakes, why not? They're LAWN SEATING tickets, and it's been RAINING all day!" "They're not allowed at this kind of concert, sir -- if it was a Norah Jones show, they wouldn't care..." "What's wrong with Foo Fighters?" "The kids set the blankets on fire, sir...." "WHAT? ON FIRE??? Dammit, I'm 47 years old, 6'1", 250 pounds, who is going to set my sleeping bag on fire???" "I'm sorry sir, you can't take them in...." And on that note, we walked back to the car, realizing that, perhaps, we are officially "old" -- because we were NOT going to sit in wet, muddy grass 100 yards from the concert stage, and wait till 10PM for the Foos to even come onstage, and pay $7.50 prices for beer and pretzels and $50 for tshirts, and possibly get rained on as well. We disgustedly tossed the stuff into the trunk, backed out of the parking space, and drove out, passing the long line of (mostly much younger) people waiting to get in, at least 20% of which were not looking forward to hearing the Foos while having a wet ass.... And our departure REALLY made me resent the outrageous $15 parking fee, which took our "blown money" total to $95! So, if one of you invites me to a concert at Smirnoff/Starplex, don't be surprised if I decline, lawn seating or no.... (apparently, all people do with their blankets during a Norah Jones concert is GO TO SLEEP on them...) And as for the Foos, well, I'll get part of my money back by finding a friend who has their new double album, and have them burn me a copy of it -- which I'll then crank up loud on my surround-sound stereo, while I lounge in my double-wide (not a TRAILER, silly) recliner with my best girl by my side, possibly even in a state of semi-undress, with a fine selection of wines and cheeses within easy reach. And my ass will be dry.... and my ears will still be ringing afterwards.... If you wonder why I have censored a certain word, it's because I've been unable to get this message through to the list for about 3 days now. Maybe that word is causing the problem. We'll see: IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE BAND We're sad to report that within the last two weeks, our own Julie Murphy Wells has been diagnosed with b_____ cancer. Because of the aggressive nature of treatment necessary (surgery and therapy), we will be forced to cancel all of our performances for the next four weeks, at least. All the dates that are cancelled are listed below. On Thursday, September 15, Julie will undergo surgery for removal of the malignancy. While initial test results give reason to believe that the tumor is contained and hasn't spread, nothing will be definite until the surgery takes place. At this point, Julie wishes to go public with her current illness as she could use all the prayer power she can get for her and her family. She's definitely showing her Fighting Irish colors more than she ever has, and continues to demonstrate a remarkable display of high spirits. She certainly hasn't lost her sharp sense of humor either. She's been an inspiration to us all, and she gives us all reason to believe she's gonna kick this cancer in the seat of the pants. She's in wonderful care with a new facility in Arlington, Virginia- top professionals with incredible bedside manner. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. We've set up a separate special email account if you'd like to send a note to Julie at my-left-b_____ at hotmail dot com. (Yes, that was Julie's idea. We weren't kidding about that sense of humor) Please watch our website for updates, and we'll do our best to keep folks in the loop with any developments. We realize that this comes on the tail end of another batch of show cancellations. It seems we've moved from one setback to another, and the devastation down South following Katrina has taken the wind out of everybody's sails. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding, and we apologize for any and all inconveniences. We'll see: The list isn't set up to censor anything as far as I know ... you may have had an administrative word at the start of a line. I'm by no measure an EFO fan, but ever since I heard this news on another list I've been sending good vibes Julie's way. I don't like their music, but I have hosted EFO at the New Haven Folk Festival so I know that every member of EFO is a wonderful person, Julie especially, and I sincerely hope she pulls through. I'm sure she will. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Sep 2005 21:05:24 -0700 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Experiment Chicken breast HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Sep 2005 00:12:15 -0400 From: pbacoustic@aol.com Subject: Re: Julie They are, indeed... and I hope she does as well!!!
