Suzie T., were you there?] In celebration of their 40th anniversary, The Ark is hosting a series of "in the round" concerts with special friends of The Ark. All of the performers donated their time for this special event. My husband and I were lucky enough to attend the first two shows in the series. The first night was Wednesday, and featured John Gorka, Maura O'Connell, Nanci Griffith and The Chenille Sisters...it was simply amazing. Last night, my husband and I met up with fellow Dar-lister Beth and her husband to see Dar, Cheryl Wheeler, Christine Lavin and Susan Werner. With that line-up, I figured that the show would be as much a comedy act as a concert. However, since I'd never seen Christine Lavin before, I wasn't totally prepared for just how funny these ladies could be. It wasn't all laughs, though - they managed to produce some beautiful music, as well. Christine Lavin was on stage left, and on her right was Cheryl Wheeler, followed by Dar and Susan. From what I recall, here is what each artist played. I think these are pretty much in the order they played them. I have to put a disclaimer, though - I am not that familiar with Christine and Susan, so I don't know if I got the song names right. Christine: "Thursday Night at The Ark with Cheryl, Dar and Susan", Wind Chimes, What was I Thinking (with three new endings, including the Runaway Bride, Prince Harry in his infamous Halloween costume and Carl Rove), You Look Pretty Good For Your Age (with the crowning of "The King of The Ark" and a song with him), I'm A Card-Carrying Bleeding Heart Liberal (written by Ervin Drake, who's answering machine Christine called on her cell phone and we all cheered and said goodnight to him and his wife Edith). Cheryl: Blessed, Your God (her "rant song," which she led in by saying something to the effect of "I'm all for God telling me what to do, but not for God telling you to tell me what to do."), Gandhi/Buddha (with two additional verses of the song from her partner Cathleen's perspective, which I guess would be called Hitler/Satan), My Cat's Birthday, 75 Septembers Dar: Teen For God, Empire, Iowa (with cell phone lights instead of lighters), The Babysitter's Here, February Susan: I Can't Be New, My Strange Nation, Let's Regret This In Advance, Movie of My Life, May I Suggest Last song sung with all four, plus the opener (Jan Krist): Where Have All The Flowers Gone Encore: The Water Is Wide (Dar sang the first verse of this song (since she said that was the only verse she knew), and it was amazing and beautiful. Unfortunately, some lyrics from the next verse were forgotten so it wasn't as good as it could have been. Seeing Susan with Christine Lavin, Cheryl Wheeler, and Dar Williams, in a round-robin format, was really magical. Truly the highlight of the weekend. We were lucky enough to be at the piano end of the stage, and so had the perfect view of Susan for the whole show. Watching her watch/listen to the other women was almost as much fun as watching/listening to her perform. Ditto on the looks on Cheryl and Christine's faces as they turned to face SW as she performed. Dar tended to look inward and/or close her eyes while SW sang. Cheryl in particular was transfixed during both 'My Strange Nation' and 'May I Suggest'. Susan also pitched in, instrumentally, on a number of songs; and when she wasn't actually playing, she was eyeing the other performer's handwork carefully and figuring out just how/when to jump in. She is such a pro. She played an impeccable 'Hail to the Chief' on guitar upon the naming of 'Mr. Ark' by Christine ('You Look Pretty Good For Your Age'), and also a rousing Happy Birthday to Cheryl on piano. She also followed Dar in the line-up each time - and twice she sat down at the piano and softly played that which Dar had just finished. And it invariably took the audience (and Dar) a beat to figure out what she was up to. She was glowing, and gorgeous in a pale sleeveless blouse, white slacks and sandals, and relaxed, and so, so, very obviously having a blast. They all pitched in on Cheryl's beautiful '75 Septembers', with SW on piano and all 3 of them on harmonies. It was stunning. Not sure I have the order right, and I didn't make notes on everyone's songs, but SW did: 'Let's Regret This in Advance', 'My Strange Nation', 'I Can't Be New', 'Movie of My Life', and 'May I Suggest'. Their big numbers, all together, at the end, were 'The Water is Wide' and 'Where Have All the Flowers Gone'. Cheryl took advantage of her verse (where have all the young girls gone/gone with young men every one) to add her own editorial comment, as only she can, of something along the lines of 'well, not ALL of them'.) Does anybody know the title of a Dar song about teenagers at summer church camp? it said 'teens for God' a lot. But I don't find that title anywhere. She was really great. That was my first (but not last) Dar Williams experience. There were wonderful harmonies on 'Iowa', too. Of course, the real highlight was the fact that Steve and Karen Murphy of Nashua, NH, made the trip! We love you guys!!! They got to play wind chimes on Christine's song by the same name. It's called "Teen For God", and is on her forthcoming album. I think the release date on that is sometime in September. :) Roll call time: who's going to Falcon Ridge? If you are wandering around the top of the hill (hopefully we'll be in the same place as last year: due *up* from the main stage, not too far from the big tree and the BOT) and you see a camp with a banner hanging up that says "ectofest", stop by and say hello. woj, JeffW, Kellie and I will be there, along with assorted other ne'er-do-wells. - -- =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V9 #65 ****************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
