I discovered Susan singing in the round with 3 men at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville in May 1994. I was blown away by all the songs I heard: Still Believe, Last of the Good Straight Girls (which I referred to in conversation with Susan later as "Pearls"), St. Mary's of Regret... There must have been at least 6 or 7 songs. That was it for me. I was back there two nights later when she opened for Jonell Moser, who was a last-minute replacement for Gary Burr. Well, it's all Alan Rowoth's fault, of course, being the moderator of the FOLK_MUSIC mailing list. I learned about so many singer-songwriters through his list, as did many other people, and Susan was one of them. Steve Clark's to blame as well; he saw her perform somewhere back East and, knowing that both Susan and I are Iowans by birth, bought me a copy of "Midwestern Saturday Night" and had her autograph it "To a fellow Hawkeye!" and then sent it to me. I saw Susan for the first time in 1994 at the Birchmere, and I was spellbound at her performance that night. The only song I remember her performing that night wasn't her own, but a cover of Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," which was wonderful. My sweetie (yes, the one Sherlyn refers to as her 'bad friend') and I made the trip from central Ohio to the Ark the day that LOTGSG was released. A full house and an appreciative audience (including a little boy sitting down front who said to Susan, in a loud voice, "Hi, Susan Werner! It's my birthday!" -- she sang "Happy Birthday" to him and then segued right into the first song of the night). The first song I ever heard of hers? I have no clue. They're all good, and we're fortunate that she's sharing them with us. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stephen N. The first professionally recorded SW song I heard was "Last of the Good Straight Girls" (as that is the first track off the first SW CD I ever heard). I have no recollection what the first song I ever heard her perform at Luther College back in '83/'84 was, however I do remember her performing the Lionel Richie song "All Night Long" once, and it was hilarious! (She sang, "We're going to party, something in a foreign language, fiesta forever...") Still believin', Chuck Ellingson "We must come to see that peace is not merely a distant goal we seek, but it is a means by which we arrive at that goal... We must pursue peaceful ends through peaceful means." Rev. I always try to catch the opener because that's how I've found some of my favorites. The crowd wasn't very interested when she came out and the conversations continued but by the 2nd song, the place was quiet and everyone was listening closely! The song that really got me was "Much At All". I ran out to the lobby after her set to find out who the heck she was and have been loving her music and her shows ever since.
