As you may know, our dear Susan was the featured performer and of course she did not let anyone down. The set started with a symphonic overture that included "76 Trombones." I'm not sure if the entire overture was from _The Music Man_ as 76T was the only part I recognized. They brought Susan out next and they did wonderful versions of "'swonderful" and "They Can't Take That Away From Me." After those three numbers, the orchestra took a break and Susan did a mini-set of her tunes with a bass player and trumpeter. They did "You Come Through," "No One Needs To Know," and "Movie of My Life." "NONTK" was absolutely gorgeous as Susan slowed it down to accomodate the bassist. It was probably the most stunning version of that song I've heard her perform. When she did "MOML," I was wondering if she'd go off-key for the last verse in front of a more upscale audience (these are symphony patrons we're talking about). She did - and they LOVED it! There was then a break for a live auction. Upon returning, Susan concluded her own set with "Give Me Chicago Any Day" and "I Can't Be New." The orchestra then joined back in for renditions of "My Heart Belongs to Daddy" and "Anything Goes" before the orchestra closed out with an "Oklahoma!" medley. Of course, what would any sort of Susan show be without a little creativity? Deciding that her final two pieces with the orchestra are a bit dated lyrically, she took it on herself to modernize them just a little bit. For "MHBtD" and in honor of the Masters Tournament, she changed the last verse. Instead of: While tearing off a game of golf I may make a play for the caddy But when I do, I don't follow through Cause my heart belongs to Daddy she sang: While tearing off a game of golf I may eye Phil Nickelson's caddy Tiger Woods has sure got the goods But my heart belongs to Daddy When it came to "Anything Goes" her lyrical alterations lived up to the title. Instead of : The world has gone mad today And good's bad today, And black's white today, And day's night today, When most guys today That women prize today Are just silly gigolos It became: If saying prayers you like If grey hairs you like If old chairs you like If back stairs you like If love affairs you like With grizzly bears you like Well then, no one will oppose... Anything Goes! and lastly: When grandmama whose age is eighty In night clubs is getting matey with gigolo's, Anything Goes. When mothers pack and leave poor father Because they decide they'd rather be tennis pros, Anything Goes. If driving fast cars you like, If low bars you like, If old hymns you like, If bare limbs you like, If Mae West you like Or me undressed you like, Why, nobody will oppose! When every night, the set that's smart Is intruding in nudist parties in studios, Anything Goes. is: When mother packs and leaves poor father Because father's so much rather wear panty hose, Anything Goes When grandads who can barely clip clop Are blasting the latest hip hop on stereos, Anything Goes If driving fast cars you like If dive bars you like If church hymns you like If bare limbs you like If pride fest you like If me undressed you like Well let's start at my toes When every night the TV networks See their very safest bet works with reality shows, Anything Goes (alternate final verse) When every day som dude who's smart is Insisting he's been to parties in UFOs, Anything goes *Special thanks to Susan for letting me take the lyric sheets* Rock on! As you may know, our dear Susan was the featured performer and >of course she did not let anyone down. Arrgh ... now I'm doubly sad I had to miss this!! Those updated lyrics are a hoot, though. I was thinking just yesterday just how incredible a lyricist Susan Werner is. I got to hear a recording of a recent show at Joe's Pub wherein a bunch of cabaret singers sang the songs of the Breithaupt brothers. The Breithaupts are from Canada, and they are writing songs very much in the old-style Broadway/cabaret vein. It's quite similar to what Susan's doing, except she's doing it so much *better*. Musically the songs are on roughly the same level, but lyrically Susan blows their stuff clear out of the water. Their songs weren't engaging or all that convincing. Susan has the ability to tell an entire story with an admirable economy of words ... the best example of this I can put out there is "Late For The Dance", where by the fifth line I am picturing every detail of the empty dance hall she's just burst into. But y'all know this. :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V9 #35 ****************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
