Susan wowed 'em in Ann Arbor last night - a completely sold-out - overbooked, actually - show. They were setting up folding chairs like crazy shortly before showtime. Hopefully the fire marshall didn't find out. There are 4 club managers at the Ark who rotate shows. Three of them were there last night, and they were there because it was Susan. No opener, just a heartfelt intro by Janelle, one of the aforementioned managers, and then, Susan. I was front row center, which put me perfectly perpendicular to Susan at the piano bench, my favorite place to be for her shows. The piano at the Ark is a highly esteemed Yamaha grand, which Susan said 'plays itself', with the obligatory phone book on the bench for her to sit on. The first set was all from the 'new project'. She was lively and talkative. She wore black slacks, a black sleeveless sweater, and black patent-leather high-heeled pumps. Hair loose and tousled, and dangly sparkly (Spanish?) earrings. After the first couple of songs, she stopped to chat, commenting on the crowd, saying she was 'thrilled....and freaked out!!". Opened with 'Don't I know You', then 'You Come Through'. Then to guitar for 'Let's Regret This In Advance'. Back to the piano for 'Philanthropy', wherein she had to 'swing alone, which is still illegal in Wyoming', commenting on how she could have used a bass player with whom to swing on that one. She then talked of her trip up from Bloomington IN, and stopping at South Bend because she'd always wanted to see the Notre Dame campus. She saw the Ttouchdown Jesus' and 'First Down Moses' statues - and then said that she DIDN'T see the 'Off-Sides Mary Magdalene' memorial. Then, 'No One Needs To Know' - which she prefaced with an intro about Cole Porter, about how he had these songs that would do an about-face in the middle, or as she put it, be like an ice-pick between the shoulder blades (?). 'Much At All' - which she sent out to everyone there on a first date. 'Give Me Chicago Any Day' - a huge crowd-pleaser. The very funny, new, 'Don't Work With Your Friends', followed by another new one perhaps called 'Hate To See You Go'. She ended the 'standard' portion of the show with her signature 'story' song, 'I Can't Be New'. Second set opened on guitar, with 'Time Between Trains', complete with a whistle-along at the end, which was very fun. 'Big Big Car',"for all the Michigan gals". Then 'Misery', 'Barbed Wire Boys', and 'Shackamaxon Street' - the latter in honor of the wonderful spring-like day we'd enjoyed (FINALLY) that day. She then opened things up for requests, to a barrage of suggestions. Someone yelled out 'Winnie The Pooh'....she was apalled, and chastised him, saying that if he was over 18, he had no business requesting that song - and then did a perfectly wonderful instrumental of the Winnie The Pooh theme song on the guitar. She then honored the request for 'Last of the Good Straight Girls', followed by 'Au Naturelle', which, she admitted, 'was a lot funnier a few years ago'. Several people had yelled out 'My Strange Nation', so they'd obviously been at the A2 Folk Festival. She then moved back to the piano for 'Movie of My Life', and 'My Strange Nation', both of which were quite enthusiastically received. So she went out with a flourish, to a standing-o and great applause. She came back out quickly, to the piano for the always stunning 'May I Suggest', then moved to the guitar, tuned briefly, then quite deliberately moved the mike aside....I gasped, cuz I was pretty sure I knew what was coming - and sure enough, she ended with 'La Vie En Rose'. And if she hadn't won over the WHOLE crowd before that, that one clinched it - I thought the roof was gonna collapse from the crowd noise. Which prompted a highly unusual (for the Ark) second encore. Which was Susan, standing at the mike, being her own entire jazz combo, vocals, horns, bass, percussion, on 'I Only Have Eyes For You'. Chatted with her briefly after the show, and was able to tell her that the Chenille Sisters had just been there, and had coverd 'May I Suggest', which seemed to really surprise and delight her - she said 'I feel like I'm going to cry just thinking about it!' - to which I replied 'I DID cry'. She asked that night's sound guy if there was a recording of it, as she said she'd LOVE to hear it. That was cool!!! All in all, a tremendous night. I first saw Susan 10 years ago, this time of year, at the Ark, at a 'Take A Chance Tuesday' (free) show, wherein they were giving out free autographed copies of 'LOTGSG' to the first 25 audience members thru the door - and there were barely twice that many people there. It's so great to see her getting the sort of respect and audience attention she so richly deserves!! Suzie T. Although she had several solo albums over the past years, she was best known as a sidewoman - as singer/violinst/mandolinist for Joe Jackson, Billy Joel (the "Storm Front" tour), and John Mellencamp (the "Dance Naked" tour, as a replacement for Lisa Germano), and as a member of the Hooters on their last studio album, "Out of Body." She also played violin on "Something So Right" from Susan's album "Last of the Good Straight Girls." TD Jesus and ND Stadium came up the other day on a national sports talk show when they were talking about stadiums and venues that people go to more for the stadium than for who's playing on any given day. Fenway and Wrigley, of course, were the slam dunks. > Then, 'No One Needs To Know' - which she prefaced with an intro about Cole > Porter, about how he had these songs that would do an about-face in the > middle, or as she put it, be like an ice-pick between the shoulder blades > (?). The Cole Porter zinger song she's mentioned before is Easy to Love: Intro: I know too well that I'm just wasting precious time In thinking such a thing could be That you could ever care for me I'm sure you hate to hear That I adore you, dear But grant me Just the same I'm not entirely to blame For love. . . Song: You'd be so easy to love So easy to idolize All others above So worth the yearning for So swell to keep every homefire burning for We'd be so grand at the game So carefree together That it does seem a shame That you can't see Your future with me 'Cause you'd be oh, so easy to love HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V9 #27 ****************************** ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
