This is great news. I always hoped that people who like to sing "standards" would discover and cover Susan's songs. There is a singer/guitar player here in LA named Fred Sokolow. He has all kinds of guitar (and other fretted instruments) books and videos out there. He likes to play really old standards backed by his jazz guitar stylings. He also plays with Ian Whitcomb, who does a lot of 20s-40s music. I've told Fred about Susan and intend to send him a copy of the latest album - especially if I can get a promo copy for him ... (hint, hint, hint.). Hi, >This is great news. I always hoped that people who like to sing >"standards" would discover and cover Susan's songs. Last month I was in Nashville and got to see a singer named Julie Harris (not *the* Julie Harris of _East of Eden_ fame, though this one is also an actress and I can't for the life of me remember what I've seen her in, but I *know* I've seen her in something). She is from Kansas City and is finding a new career in her golden years singing in her hometown's jazz rooms. The showcase I saw gave her 4 songs, so she did a Gershwin song, a Harold Arlen song (of course Susan's not the only one marking his 100th birthday this year), and two of her original compositions. Both were stellar songs, and she has a great "jazz voice" and demeanor so it was all great. Afterwards I asked her if she'd heard of Susan Werner, and she said she hadn't, but was very intrigued to hear about someone else writing her own songs in that style. She said she would definitely check out _I Can't Be New_. So if anybody out there is in Kansas City, check out Julie Harris -- and report back if she starts singing any of Susan's songs! :) =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Mar 2005 05:18:00 +1100 From: Sherlyn Koo Subject: Last night at Wolf Trap Hey folks, It was a very nice show last night at Wolf Trap - it was my first time seeing Susan in more than 3 years as well, so I was pretty excited. The venue was almost full, I think only the back row of the balcony was empty. The set list included (not in order & completely off the top of my head) - Don't I Know You Stay on Your Side of Town Give Me Chicago Any Day May I Suggest Barbed Wire Boys Time Between Trains a great cover of Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics Just Like Starting Over My Strange Nation (great song) I Can't Be New Shackamaxon Street My Mother's Garden Philanthropy Movie of My Life a very amusing new song about not working with your friends ...and probably lots more that I'm not remembering right now. Susan had Greg Holt (I think that was his name), a bass player from Boston, up on stage with her for about half the show, and it looked like they were both having fun. I kind of wish there had been more guitar stuff (esp. Bonsai and/or St Mary's), but that's just my opinion. I'm much more of a folkie than a jazz/cabaret fan anyway. I'll be in the US for another 1-3 weeks and I haven't really figured out the rest of my schedule yet (hey meth/woj - email me your ph# !) but I'm hoping to make it to at least a couple more shows, so maybe I'll see some of you there!
