SUSAN WERNER SUSAN WERNER: "I Can't Be New," is Werner's fourth nationally released recording, Susan Werner proves the era of the Great American Songbook is not dead, it's just being re-invented. With her new turns on traditional pop songs, Werner's new CD brings to mind George Gershwin, Cole Porter and Richard Rodgers without simple imitation. Today she performs in our studio. You can learn more about her at susanwerner.com However, the website does not mention Susan: http://www.aetv.com/global/listings/series_showcase.jsp?NetwCode=AEN&EGrpT ype =Series&Id=186433 Decide for yourself -- do I tune in, or sleep in. Susan performed two songs, and in between was interviewed by Elliott Forrest. Tune in! You'll be glad you did -- it's a great little segment (and the rest of the show is worthwhile as well). We grab Breakfast with the Arts on TiVo every week, because you never know what little gems are going to show up on it. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2004 12:31:23 -0800 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Cinegrill Last Sunday (11/14/2004) evening I saw Susan at the Cinegrill in the famous old Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. I found a parking space on the street a couple blocks away so I saved on the valet price and hassle of waiting for the car after the show. We arrived fairly early and were looking around the hotel when we heard Susan playing Movie of My Life through an open side door, near the Cingrill, which is a showroom in the basement of the hotel. My friend had read an article about the show in the Pasadena Star News. In the article Susan mentioned that she would have her hair up, a dress, and high heels, and that there would not be usual fare of jeans in the audience. The people in line varied in attire. There was the regular jeans and flannel shirt McCabes look, and men in suits and women in dresses. Others in business casual, slacks and shirts. I wore all black, with a leather jacket and a Jerry Garcia tie. I did not make reservations, but knew that there would be room because that morning I went on the website and was able to load 25 tickets into my shopping cart. If you make reservations, and don't show up, you are out $30 per person. The doors opened around 6:30 and they recommended that we get there before then to get a decent table. We were about 12th in line. I had been apprehensive about having to tip a snooty maitre d' to get a good table, but that wasn't necessary. A nice young woman took my credit card to provisionally charge the $30 per person cover and took us in. She took parties in one at a time, so the line was a bit slow. We had our choice of any available seat. Most of the people ahead of us took the lower level, below the stage, even though some would be seeing Susan from behind. This was lucky for us, because we got the first tier level, which was roughly eye-level with Susan, right in the center facing toward where Susan would be facing. As far as I was concerned, this was the best table in the house. The table next to us was the only reserved table in the house. I expected Camryn Mannheim and Keb Mo, who have become regulars at Susan's LA shows, to be seated at the reserved table, but right befoe the show started, two men came in and sat there. Don't know who they were. Many of the crowd seemed new to Susan, probably having read an article or because they follow the Cinegrill ads, but don't follow McCabes ads. There were 75 reservations when we came in, and I would guess maybe 10 people showed up in addition to that. Recently the Cinegrill lowered its mandatory food and drink minimum from $20 to $10, which would allow you to get a drink or two if you didn't want to eat. We ordered dinner. There were only two waiters and two bussers for the entire room which made it hard to get our dinner order taken after our drinks were brought. We finally received our food about 7:30. By the time the 8:30 showtime rolled around, I felt that I'd had a pretty full evening already! Susan didn't end up starting until around 8:45. She played until 10:15, including all encores. Susan came out in her usual black jeans, black shirt and sweater, regular hair. Susan did not dress up as she'd suggested she would. After the show I heard her telling someone that she decided to be who she is, a singer / songwriter. So the show was the regular McCabes Susan with the two guitars and the piano and the usual dress, it just happened to be at a more upscale jazz room. Susan was joined on stage for many songs by stand up bass player Tim Emmons, a local whom she said she'd only met a half hour earlier. He did a good job. I wonder if Susan had sent him her CD ahead of time. In 1987, I took a bass workshop at a music school from Tim Emmons, and I've seen him play at various other things over the years, for example an Easter Service at All Saints Episcopal Church in 1995. The show was the expected Susan fare, focusing on the new piano stuff from the new CD. One brand new song that she said she wrote after her Carnegie Hall show with Michael Feinstein. She did have both guitars and did some guitar songs, some that she usually does on piano. One of the encores was John Lennon's Just Like Starting Over, which was really nice. You could tell a lot of the crowd was new to Susan because many of the lines in the songs were getting lots of laughs. There was a table of 4 people below me. One fellow was just cracking up, especially on Movie of My Life. I was getting off on him seeing Susan for the first time and laughing so much. After the show I thanked him for the experience. He and his friends were from a performing arts school. One of the women had heard Susan on NPR and jumped at the chance when she saw she was going to be at the Cinegrill. She told Susan that she didn't realize that she played McCabes and would watch the McCabes ads from now on. Parking at the Cinegrill $8 + tip (but not if you park on the street) Cover charge: $30 per person Dinner, a beer, and tip: $40 per person Being reminded once again why I've been a fan since 1994: Priceless. Hoping to see Susan back at McCabes next time. ;-) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Nov 2004 15:50:41 EST From: PBacoustic@aol.com Subject: Re: Cinegrill Good review, Ron!!!!
