Speaking of "gorgeous versions," I thought Donna Summer's rendition of "God Bless America" at the World Series last night was primo. I've never been much for the "bad girl" of disco, but I thought she was very good. As for the song, it sure has gotten a LOT of play during the playoffs. I remember when the only time we heard it was when Kate Smith sang to lift the Flyers to a couple of Stanley Cups in the '70s. Hi, Deb responded: > Speaking of "gorgeous versions," I thought Donna Summer's rendition of "God >Bless America" at the World Series last night was primo. I did too -- that woman can *sing*. (And like when Ms. Werner sang the national anthem at Fenway, she sang live into the PA and didn't use a prerecorded track! She gets points for that.) >As for the song, >it sure has gotten a LOT of play during the playoffs. For the remainder of the 2001 season and most of the 2002 season, every major league ballpark had a rendition during the seventh-inning stretch. Now, only Yankee Stadium does it every single game that I know of. Fenway only does it on holidays etc. I'm sure FOX requires it for the playoff games, because it's another opportunity to get someone famous to sing something on teevee. Personally I can't stand the song, but hey... =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== hear at the HOMe House Concert Series http://hom.smoe.org =============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Oct 2004 12:08:39 -0400 (EDT) From: "Kris Richardson" Subject: Simona? I thought James Taylor did a great job with the Star Spangled Banner. I think he did it live as well. Apparently he rehearsed it 5 times at Fenway before the game. He put his own touch on the phrasing.
