Anyone else catch the screwup on Saturday Night Live last night? The performer, one Ashleigh(sp?) Simpson, and her accompanying band, just launched into the opening rock guitarchord intro to whatever song it was for their second number of the night, and the unfortunate Ms. Simpson was standing in back by the drum set, waiting for the intro to finish... Unfortunately, without microphone up to her mouth, SINGING WAS BEING HEARD, FROM THE MIDDLE(?) OF THE SONG... after a few seconds, the singing stopped... and the guitarists looked at each other, and you could see the "oh, shit.." in their eyes....and kept on playing... and Simpson shook her head in disgust, totally embarrassed and exposed, and walked off stage... CUT TO COMMERCIAL... ON TO THE NEXT SKIT.... BWAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA. My 15 yr old insists (*insists*, I tell you) that performers 'these days' (as opposed to brontosaurus times?) perform live but always play with the additional backup of their recorded music to enrich the sound of their performance. His argument: 'nobody sounds that great if they're just playing regularly'. My counter-argument: 'if they suck to begin with how'd they get to be so popular/big that they think by adding layers of their own sucktastic voices/instruments they'll sound any better?'. Issue is currently unresolved. Gales of giggles disturbed the discussion as A.S. hoedown'ed off the stage. Not that I'd ever had a deep yearning to plunk down three pennies to purchase that gal's CD, but had I been interested at any point, she immediately lost a sale at the end of SNL during her APOLOGY when she blamed the freakin' band for the oops. Hi all, Paul wrote: >Anyone else catch the screwup on Saturday Night Live last night? Sorry I missed that. I climbed out of the shower in time to see the band vamping on stage. An SNL insider atributed the glitch to a computer error. Also stated it wasn't the first time someone has lipsynched on the show (shades of Brittny). The big sin was blaming her band, who obviously are musicians. I remember when the show was young and they had some cutting edge performers, and rock legends. How the mighty have fallen. I usually just watch the intro, and the news segment. Last season they had Christina Aguilera on, and I hung with the program, and was glad I did. She did a gorgeous version of her hit "Beautiful" during her intro....a capella.....and blew me away. That girl *does* have a set of pipes on her. She then followed up in the first skit with a dead on imitation of Samantha (Kim Catrall) in a Sex in the City skit. Her first line brought down the house. So I guess being a young, beautiful, pop icon doesn't necessarily mean you're a lousy musician ;-) Charlie HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Oct 2004 23:19:12 -0700 From: "john vavrek" Subject: Re: the hazards of lipsynching... gee, this thread reminds me of a conversation i had recently with my son about the: "presidential" "debates" .... wasn't it nice when artists (and politicians) actually played "unplugged?" isn't it a glimpse of something honest and open when they (the musicians at least ) do? me, i can't wait for november third.... no more phone calls!
