And it's why I hope that the next time she plays in New York City, it's at somewhere like the Algonquin or the Cafe Carlyle or Feinstein's at the Regency -- three other joints that I can't afford. When ICBN was released, I wrote an editorial on BroadwayStars.com boosting Susan and asking the question "Why isn't every cabaret singer in New York performing these songs?" Well, the answer is simple: cabaret music and folk music are separate worlds, and most fans of one style are not fans of the other. But Susan has the ability to bridge these worlds and build strong audiences in both. And playing at the Cinegrill is a great way to do it. (When I saw Susan perform last month, she proudly mentioned onstage that some cabaret performers are now doing "Movie of My Life" - but we all know that song is just the tip of the iceberg as far as Susan's music is concerned.) Gregg, you write that instead of going to the Cinegrill, we should "buy a few copies of her latest CD for friends." Well, I've done that - I've given copies of Susan's CDs as gifts to people whom I knew would love Susan's music. And they do. (And I'm given Susan's CDs to several performers I've gotten to know, including an actress who is as big a star as Broadway has these days. And everyone I have given a CD to has been very grateful.) But that's not enough to make Susan the huge star that we all know she deserves to be. If you want to support Susan and save some money, then by all means see her at McCabe's rather than the Cinegrill. But I hope that Susan plays "ripoff joints like Cinegrill" more and more. - -Tim - -----Original Message----- From: Gregg Sent: Sep 20, 2004 1:06 PM To: believers@smoe.org, believers-digest@smoe.org Subject: Re: believers-digest V8 #114 Sorry, I'll pass. Why support freak'n ripoff joints like Cinegrill which only exist as places to be seen. What a joke. Go see Susan at McCabes, or anywhere else, and buy a few copies of her latest CD for friends. I think Michael Feinstein may own all or part of the Cinegrill. I do think it's good that Susan is branching into new and different venues. Hopefully, she will attract a new audience. I can see why she couldn't book McCabes and Cinegrill on the same weekend - probably she can't afford to dilute the audience for her first Cinegrill appearance by offering a McCabes alternative. Hopefully, she'll be able to please both audiences in the future. I just wish she'd spend more time on the West Coast when she comes out here instead of booking only 2 or 3 gigs between Canada and Mexico.
