It's a relatively small, narrow place, with maybe 8 chairs per side with an aisle down the center... it's basically their "back room" full of guitars on the walls. I'd suggest getting there early... However, don't sit in the front couple rows, you'll get neck strain from looking upwards all night... Hey, Ron Rosen, you going??? What's the room hold, maybe 200? What's the room hold, maybe 200? Ron Rosen is going. Having first discovered Susan at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville on May 5, 1994, we will be celebrating my first decade of Susan fandom!! Look for Kevin Moore (Keb Mo) in the audience; lately he hasn't missed a Susan McCabes show. Actually the degree of neckstrain in the first couple rows isn't that bad, although I do prefer to sit a bit further back. The room can hold about 180, but if the show is not a complete sellout, they sometimes don't put as many rows in as they can. If there are no dividers in front of the back wall of guitars, then that means that they expect the maximum. I saw Susan at a fairly new venue, The Triple Door, in Seattle on Wednesday night. I even gave up my juggling night to go see her, which rarely happens. This was Susan's first time in Seattle in @ 2 years, so she has been sorely missed. She looked rather elegant in all black, with a net type open shirt over a sleeveless square neck shirt. As she took note to mention, she wasn't dressed in her usual fare. Her hair was up, she had on dangly silver earrings, and she even had on, as she said, 'hosiery,' which I had noticed as soon as she came out. She said she liked the venue, which is a refurbished theater with a real piano. It's a dinner theater, which is different for up here. She played most of the songs from her new CD, and asked for requests at one point. I'm too shy to holler anything out, but luckily someone else requested May I Suggest, which she played. She also played Much At All, Story of My Life, and Courting The Muse from her older stuff. She said she had walked around in Seattle during the day. (And, don't tell anyone, but it was sunny and fairly warm, @62.) She asked why everyone seemed so nice here. They smiled at her on the street just in case they knew her. She said it was a bit creepy having people be friendly. She confirmed that we are a major metropolitan city, then asked where the horn honking was. Someone yelled up that we swear instead, but Susan already figured out it's with our windows closed. So she encouraged us to actually roll down our car window sometime soon and swear at a driver when we get mad! It was a beautiful spring day in Seattle, which is always an impressive sight. We usually only see Susan once a year, unlike you lucky folks 'back east,' but she was worth the 2 year wait. When I first saw her @1994 in Ballard (north area of Seattle) playing in a tavern with Vance Gilbert, I knew she would make it big in the folk circles (I thought she was on par with Patty Larkin, ability wise) yet I still continue to be amazed at her talent each time I see her. I hope you folks at McCabes and other destinations in CA have as much fun as we did. She never disappoints.
