It's envy dammit, are you happy now?). She'd clearly done her uvular drills before hitting the stage at Cafe Montmarte tonight. N The presentation: hair clipped up into a froof-boing cute doo, Black pantsuit sorta deal (I am not the fashion police so will just say she looked understatedly sssizzling). For anyone in the IL or WI area she will be performing in Rockford tomorrow night and hopes everyone will come out, promising hosiery, an up-doo, and pants with slits for any/all who attend. [for those who were there tonight, I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you - I was the dorky and embarrassingly obvious late-comer who seated herself in the only space I saw available: on the floor - immediately below stage ... and yes, it was I who had to ask exactly where the slit was located. It makes a difference to know such important things if I'm road-tripping to Rockford] Lots of piano and guitar action, though I'd say probably more piano than guitar. Tomorrow's Rockford show will have an additional bass player, she said. Tonight she was capably her own jazz ensemble. Mid-way through her performance, she pondered out loud about the noisy people in the adjoining room (who, it was later discovered, had actually come to hear her after hearing the NPR spot but there were no speakers set up in that section but who knew?) to whom she offered $100 to sssshhh so she could finish. 'I'm gettin' old. Am I getting old? I'm getting old. I was #2 on Amazon last week - I was bigger than Jesus Christ there, I can do this, right? It's worth it to me. A hundred bucks if you'll shut up till I finish, want a hundred bucks?' The talking folks clapped their approval. The rest of the audience clapped. Win-win! (I love a story with a happy ending ) I didn't make any notes about which songs in what order (sorry). Nearly everything she performed was on the new 'I Can't Be New' CD, though she did invite requests from the crowd ('Barbed Wire Boys') and did a couple of others from LOTGSG ('Much At All'). Ahh, short-term memory, it really is true what they say about inhaling. Susan's musicianship, not surprisingly, really truly shines in her live shows. Please - anyone else catch the show tonight who can fill in my Eisenhower Expressway pothole sized memory gaps and share with the class? Thank you, susan! that is *exactly* the adjective my brain was trying to roust out on a Friday afternoon - "dreaded"!! As to comparisons, I much prefer the one I heard several people use the first time I *finally* got a chance to hear Susan Werner live -- after reading rave reivews on old rec.music.folk ... [hey - remember 'ghost' anyone?] ... 93 maybe. Susan was opening for Leo Kottke. During the intermission, there was a mad rush to the CD sales table and all of her CDs sold out. And the conversation I overheard was saying "like Joni Mitchell" ... re both the guitar stylings and the jazzy vocals as well as the folk/singer-songwriter. (and this was when Susan was fighting a cold) Oh, well, comparisons to a currently-hot-selling-artist that the current younger music-buyers know isn't all that bad. They'll be enlightened quickly after purchasing *good* music! Regards, Carolyn Andre - --- candre@house-of-music.com Chicago, IL / USA Support Independent Music!
