We're all so busy listening to it that we can't be torn away to type! ;) I gotta say, this is my favorite Susie CD. I'm surprised at that, because I have a definite guitar bias in the live show. But I think the arrangements are fearlessly creative, fresh, and truly representative of Susan's personality - playful, witty & wise - it's not a huge departure from her live set. Crit did a great job on her vocals - they're so present and rich and warm. I also like the variety in instrumentation from track to track. And the writing, well, damn! Already knew that would be top notch. ;) If any of you have been waiting for reviews to purchase this CD, stop the waiting and buy it now! It's a gem. I wanted to add that I think the track that will be most interesting to discuss is 'Philanthropy'. It's the one song on the CD farthest from the live arrangements, and it takes some brilliant risks. I'm a huge fan of this particular track, but it may be harder to absorb for others who've heard the original version live and prefer that. But I like risks, and lots and lots of harmonies, so I dig it the most! My other faves on the record are: 'I'm Not Sure' & 'You Come Through' . Well, I haven't had time to catch up with the 149 unread messages in the Susan folder of my mailbox... but let me add my name to the chorus of believers. I received the album from Amazon on Wednesday, and even I am surprised at how rich it is. The intricacy of the songwriting is as deep as before, but there's a sense of fun here that I've never gotten from any of Susan's previous albums. Yes, there are moving ballads like "Late for the Dance" - and, by the way, smart move on her part making such a moving song the second track on the disc, it establishes her sense of purpose early on. But in the past, the fun was isolated to comic numbers like "Big Car" and "Just the Band," or rockers like "Tappan Zee." This time around, the highs are higher and last longer: the CD ends with 5 tracks that are just too enjoyable for words, even when they're not trying to be funny. Although it's not a live album, I think this album reflects the highs, the lows, the journey Susan takes her live audience on more than any other album. While it will take a huge effort to knock NNF from the top spot on my list, and I do miss hearing a harder-rocking number or two, "I Can't Be New" makes the case for Susan Werner as a mature and sophisticated artist better than any album she's done so far. I'm driving up to the 7:30 show at Joe's Pub on Saturday night... hope to see some of you there. - -Tim > [Original Message] > From: > To: > Date: 3/11/2004 12:06:11 PM > Subject: The New I Can't Be New CD! > > No one is saying how they like the new cd yet... what's up? > > Pattye HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2004 23:19:21 -0600 From: "Chuck Ellingson" Subject: RE: The New I Can't Be New CD!
