I saw Susan in Cedarburg, Wisconsin Friday night at the Cedarburg Cultural Center, where my companion of the evening and I had seen her (along with two other friends) perform three years ago. (Since I had just found out about the gig on Thursday night, I wasnt able to gather my usual size entourage.) Adorned in black slacks and a vertically striped black and white blouse with an all-white collar (an outfit the likes you might see worn by Grace Adler of TVs Will and Grace), Susan performed gloriously. During the evenings patter, she informed the crowd that this was her first gig in some time. It didnt show. Starting the evening on guitar (for the entirety of the first set) with Time Between Trains, Susan then performed Shade of Gray and Little Yellow House, followed by banter which included a comment about the following song, St. Marys of Regret. During that song and the next, Some Other Town, Susan seemed genuinely rhapsodic. She lightened up with All of the Above and Au Naturelle, then seguewayed into Barbed Wire Boys, The Motorists Prayer, Big Car, and wrapped up the first set with Little Red Dress. (Im doing this from memory, so if any fellow believers post with a different set list, you may prefer to believe them. Also, it was a cold, late night after a long, cold week, so the usual not-so-significant details will be skipped in this post. Please forgive me. I promise to do better next time.) The second set started on piano and included many of the tunes from the upcoming Susie Chanteussie CD. The set included I'd Be Good for You, Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter, Late for the Dance, I Cant Be New, Dont I Know You from Somewhere? (Im guessing at that title), So Nice Seeing You Again, and a song she said shed just written. She played the guitar for two of the piano numbers because she said they sounded better on guitar. There were many more tunes in the second set, but their names escape me at present. (Again, I beg your forgiveness and promise to do better next time, when I have more than 24 hours to prepare.) The evening ended with two encores: Like Bonsai and May I Suggest. (She wittily retorted to an audience members request for Misery & Happiness.) It was a wonderful evening. Im sure Susan converted a few more folks to her brand of religion. :-) After the concert, in her usual selfless mode, Susan let a couple of young girls experiment on the stage with her guitar and metal slide (I think thats what its called) while she spoke with their parents at the back of the hall.
