If the owners haven't been able to make enough money to cover their rent, on what basis should we ask politicians to keep it open? I love the place as much as the next person, and think that NYU is being a bit harsh and that TBL deserves some credit for their role in raising the real estate values in the neighborhood, but the bottom line is that The Bottom Line isn't even breaking even. This isn't like a non-profit museum. It's a business. If Disney suddenly found itself in trouble, would we ask politicians to protect that American cultural institution? So on what basis should we ask politicians to intervene? Seriously. Loans would not work here, and TBL does not employ enough workers to have any impact on the local economy. The only solution that seems workable to me is for the owners to find another venue and change their business model. The one they have now doesn't work, and they haven't changed it much at all in the last 30 years. If we were going to appeal to politicians for help, I'd be more inclined towards asking for help for the Folk Music Museum . At least they have a mission to help preserve our culture. Despite its rich history and many significant events, The Bottom Line is a business designed to make profit for its owners. Good show. Highlights - (1) Vance's ad lib about trees in Ellis's The Speed of Trees. The ad lib was sort of a rap/reggae about how the slow trees get caught and turned into the guitars that are hanging on the walls at McCabes. (2) Ellis starts out singing Dear Prudence, Vance chimes in with a counter-point of She's Leaving Home. To the same guitar part, they keep changing Beatle songs, then some Wings songs, then Ebony and Ivory (which got a laugh), then Vance does a Yoko immitation, more Beatle songs, all to the say guitar part and rhythm. Very cool. (3) Encore: May I Suggest by Susan Werner. Someone yelled out another song suggestion, and Ellis said, ''Let's do Susan Werner.'' Then Vance made some lewd comment about doing Susan Werner, but May I Suggest was awesome.
