Peggy asked, > Susan mentioned that she would be performing the national anthem at Fenway As someone else mentioned, Susan was quoted in a Philly article about Gene Shay, and it mentioned she was a local singer, which leads me to ask a two-part question: Is Susan still living in the Philly area, and has she ever sung the national anthem at a Philly sporting event? I know she has Lauren Hart as competition at Flyers games, but has she sung elsewhere? It was a late addition to the schedule page, so I wanted to make sure that I plugged it as much as possible just in case anyone missed it! - --Marty - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------- It is never too late to be what you might have been. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ - ------------------------- HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 2003 21:03:23 -0400 From: "pat mcallister" Subject: Re: when is she singing at Fenway? Oy!!! Not to mention, the Sox never win when I'm listening to or watching the game, so when I'm actually in the park you know good things can't possibly happen. :} So.......Meredith, do we believers have a "7th inning stretch" location to meet and say hi? I will also be at the game. It was a wonderful night. Lots of contributions from lots of people; Susan's role was small, but no smaller than anyone else's. The show opened with a brief "prologue" by Saul Broudy and Friends (Ken Ulansey, Jay Ansill and Dennis Gormley) - a funny medley of "songs you might hear on the Gene Shay show" - it lurched wildly between folk, blues, bluegrass and jazz, just like Gene's show might. Then Tom Rush came on to play Gene's longtime theme, "Mole's Moan." Then a large ensemble of folkies took their places on folding chairs arranged in a semicircle. They each took to the microphone to do one song apiece. They were: Tom Paxton; Julie Gold; Eric Andersen; The Kennedys; Sonia; Susan Werner; Chris Smither; Tony Trischka & Skyline; Freebo; David Bromberg; and Tom Rush again. Tom Paxton, with two backing musicians, opened with "The Last Thing on My Mind." Right after he started, Maura Kennedy excitedly ran to the microphone to sing some impromptu harmony, and she motioned Susan to join her. Susan didn't seem to know the song as well as Maura did... but she made it through ok with Maura's help. Susan then took her seat again next to Chris Smither - and one of the most enjoyable things about the show was seeing Susan and Chris slap their thighs in time with the music and break into silly grins when the performers would do something really exciting - like Sonia tearing it up on a Phil Ochs song (with Phil's sister in the audience), or Freebo and David Bromberg backing each other up and leading their songs into unexpected territories. When Pete and Maura Kennedy pulled out the rock-star moves on a version of "Life Is Large," Susan could barely contain herself. Two songs later, Susan took to the microphone and sang "LOTGSG" in the finger-picking arrangement she's been doing lately. Pete Kennedy played lead guitar. She introduced it by saying that when you play a new song for Gene, sometimes he'll be really encouraging, and sometimes he'll give you a look that says "What the hell is that?" She introduced LOTGSG by saying that she played it backstage for Gene at the Painted Bride, and although she hadn't finished writing the song, Gene let her know she was on the right track. Tom Rush closed Act One with his traditional set-closer, "Wasn't That a Mighty Storm," with the whole ensemble joining in. Now, there were two basses onstage - an acoustic bass (played by Tom Paxton's sideman) and an electric bass (played by Larry Cohen of Skyline). During "Mighty Storm," Paxton's guy was playing his acoustic bass. About 3/4 of the way through the song, Susan noticed that no one was playing the electric bass - so she picked it up and played it herself! During the intermission, Full Frontal Folk played a set in the lobby. Then came Act Two: an opening song from 4 Way Street; a two-song set by Christine Lavin, a three-song set by John Prine, and a three-song set by Arlo Guthrie and his son. When Christine came onstage, she proudly announced that unlike most of the performers, she would *not* be doing a song Gene had requested, and instead said she would sing a song about the island vacation that she hoped Gene would give himself soon. She then sang her hilarious song "Wind Chimes," about how a peaceful getaway can be interrupted by the constant clanging of those supposedly-charming chimes. During the second verse, Susan and the rest of the women from Act One - plus Tom Paxton! - ran onstage with wind chimes and shook them around Christine. Then during the third verse, they all went into the audience, about ten rows back to where Gene and his family were sitting, and shook the chimes around him! When Christine mentioned a hula dance in the lyrics, of course Susan started to hula... The show ended with the whole cast joining Arlo for "City of New Orleans." Susan looked very amused when Christine, standing next to her, suddenly pulled out her dual-baton-twirling routine -- highly inappropriate, of course, but very funny. Unfortunately, just describing the music barely does the show justice. There was a lot of comedy (from Prine, Bromberg and others), and a lot of warmth. Several of the performers stated they wouldn't have an audience in Philadelphia without Gene's radio show, and they weren't kidding. And DJ Ed Sciacky correctly noted that Gene created a whole style of "how to talk to a radio audience" that influenced a generation of local DJ's. It was a big lovefest, a great tribute to a great man. I just wish I had picked up one of the Gene Shay bobble head dolls in the lobby... - -Tim HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 May 2003 23:47:50 EDT From: Scoop52256@aol.com Subject: Re: when is she singing at Fenway?
