(Note that Jonathan writes a monthly cd review column on TalkinBroadway.com called "Sound Advice.") Jonathan brings ''Some Kind of Music'' to The Duplex Posted by Wayman Wong on April 25, 2003 at 14:22:57: It was fun to see Talkin' Broadway's Jonathan Frank make his own ''Kind of Music'' at The Duplex. Instead of giving ''Sound Advice,'' he offered a delightfully eclectic selection of underexposed songs. I really enjoyed his slow and smoldering rendition of Amanda McBroom's ''Is It Hot in Here?,'' which especially suited the lower, resonant register of his lyric baritone. And he took Michael Holland's wickedly witty song ''Marjorie and the Gas Man'' and made it score high on the laugh meter. Plus, he was terrific ''translating'' a fractured French song sung by his MAC Award-winning guest star, Julie Reyburn. But my favorite thing was his beautiful pairing of Susan Werner's wry ''Movie of My Life,'' in which Jonathan fantasizes about his world on the silver screen, and its seamless segue into ''Stars,'' Janis Ian's poignant meditation about fleeting fame. Dick Gallagher was wonderful as always, at the keyboard. Granted, there were a few songs I wasn't as crazy about, like the Leigh/Coleman classics ''The Best Is Yet to Come'' and ''You Fascinate Me So,'' but largely because they've been overexposed in N.Y. cabaret. Even so, Jonathan lent them his theatrical flair, sly sense of humor and clean, sardonic delivery. And what an audience it was. I spotted at least a baker's dozen of singers and songwriters: Tom Andersen, Mary Foster Conklin, Tim Di Pasqua, Amanda Green, David Gurland, Michael Holland, Karen Mack, Karen Mason, Sue Matsuki, Eric Pickering, Paul Rolnick, Parker Scott and Michael Vaccaro. Judging by the ample applause for Jonathan, a fine time was had by all. I got into the car tonight for a quick run to the store and heard a Susan concert in a "Live from Godfrey Daniels" broadcast, but I caught it more than half way through! I plan to beg abjectly for them to play it again. Just had to vent. leslie HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Apr 2003 20:13:12 -0500 From: "Beth McConnell" Subject: RE: cd project update *(not sure if I actually sent this or it was my imagination) You can do it!
