Once a song has been published (recorded or sheet music) anyone is entitled to record it by paying the applicable mechanical royalties. I'm actually on that CD along with my partners in SomethingBlack. Further info at http://www.copyright.gov >they can prevent lyric changes, however minor, though, including gender. Essentially true, although I know of no cases where gender was an issue. There may be some but I don't know of them. At issue here is whether we want to do something that 1)might get Susan in hot water 2)might get smoe.org in trouble. I don't. I'm not sure if "I" might be liable as the moderator of the list. As for recording Bonsai, Greg Simon is an aquaintance of mine, a local guy, and I'm sure he'll give permission if I can scout him out, and I'm trying my best. I'd go ahead and do the song. According to Greg, he had very little to do with the co-writing, but I suspect that's false modesty on his part. Charlie (=}===# PS. Thanks all for the tips on software for midi. I'm probably gonna go ahead and try to do this acoustically. But it's handy to have a midi click track in case I want to further modify it after the project. Yahoo! I don't disagree that if we're not taking any money out of anyone's pockets, then it should be okay to record any song. However, Susan and Larry have both asked us NOT to record these songs (co-writes and unrecorded), and to in fact keep this whole project under the radar. Therefore I'll steadfastly adhere to their wishes and not allow any such recordings to make it to the cd. Susan has plenty of her own material that she's given us permission to use. Sorry if I'm coming across as a hard-ass here, but I think we have an opportunity here to do something really cool, to pay tribute to someone who inspires us all, so let's not take any unnecessary chances that may get Susan in hot water down the road. In reality, while Susan holds the publishing rights to her songs, she may not hold the distribution copyright, so technically we're recording and distributing music that someone else may partially own. Whether we're making money or not on this (and we're NOT), we still don't really have full permission to do this. Even if we had the permission of a co-author, that still doesn't get us past all the red tape. So let's just accept this project for what it is and try not to turn it into a legal nightmare. It's going to be a great deal of fun to work on for all of us, and I think Suze is really going to be impressed, and that's what this is all about. Folks . . . I have indeed found it. I purchased a satellite radio this week and can't believe how great it is. One of the 100 channels is 24-hour folk music. Yep, the real thing. EVERYTHING from Woodie Guthrie and Pete Seeger all the way to Ellis Paul, Lucy Kaplansky, and Susan Graham White (no, I have not heard you-know-who yet). No commercials. No DJs. No being tethered to a computer streaming a radio station. After listening for about 12 hours over three days, I can't remember one repeated song. If this is your thing, stop by a Best Buy or Circuit City to check one out. Cost for the receiver and portable boom box (which has unbelieveable sound -- much better than my Bose radio) is about $225 (and $10 per month). It sure is worth it to me. One caveat: It works by receiving a satellite feed, which apparently has to be received through windows (preferably with southern exposure). There are many dead spots in my house, but I have been able to find live spots in most every room. I think there are ways to improve reception, but I have not had the opportunity yet to explore them. This is really something. Does anyone else here have one? Similar or different experience from mine?
