This is our first attempt at something like this, so maybe taking it slow and one step at a time is best. Susan, this list and her fans aren't going anywhere, so there will ample time to do a second cd later of original tracks. I'll certainly go with what the majority wants, but right now I'm voting to start with a SW only cd. I'll talk with Susan about your question Kellie. My guess is that she might want people to stick with what's already been recorded, as she'll want first crack at recording her own material. And then there are those legal issues. I'll get back to you ASAP on this. Kris >This sounds reasonable to me. My vote is in for working on the Susie >covers CD first. For the CD project, what do people think of covering songs that Susan did not write? I guess there are 4 categories: 1. Susan-written songs (definitely ok) 2. Songs written by others that no one is known for recording (The Great Out There) (probably ok) 3. Songs written by others that Susan is mostly known for (Standing in my Own Way) or very identified with (Little Girl Lost [Karla Faye]) (what do you think?) 4. Songs covered by Susan that someone else is mostly known for recording (Everybody's Talkin', Help!, Vincent, Ode to Billy Joe, etc.) (not ok) I would say categories 1 and 2 are ok. I'm on the fence on category 3, but probaby would vote no. And I would think category 4 would be out. I'm sure Greg would not object, but I'll see if I can contact him about it. > 3. Songs written by others that Susan is mostly known for (Standing in my > Own > Way) or very identified with (Little Girl Lost [Karla Faye]) (what do > you think?) We have those copyright issues here, and most certainly with Cole Porter tunes. If someone really, really wants to cover a cover, we would have to contact Harry Fox agency and get learance. About .089 per tune, per copy. In the case of Mary Gautier, she might be OK with that. Maybe i can come up with an incentive for her ;-) > 4. Songs covered by Susan that someone else is mostly known for recording > (Everybody's Talkin', Help!, Vincent, Ode to Billy Joe, etc.) (not ok) Copyright again, but they havfge to let you record it if you pay. That's the law. > I would say categories 1 and 2 are ok. I'm on the fence on category 3, but > probaby would vote no. And I would think category 4 would be out. I'm thinking of St. Mary's of Regret with 3 part harmony. And I'll play it in dropped D probably capo'd at 5. Of course, I still have to figure out how to use the computer to do this. I just got a new soundcard and software (Cakewalk) to do this. Does anyone have a source for cheap or free midi writing software. It's easier for me to write out parts in standard notation than it is for me to play them on a midi keyboard ;-) Charlie (=}===# HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 03 12:39:56 -0500 From: Kris Richardson Subject: Unrecorded SW Songs The official word on recording any of Susan's songs that she herself has yet to record is a firm "no". As far as covering covers or co-written songs, I think we might want to play it safe and stay clear. We have permission to do anything that Susan has penned herself, and there's plenty of material there to choose from. Now if a co-writer, like Greg Simon as Charlie mentioned, gives us clear permission as well, then I'd say that's song is fair game. Kris >This sounds reasonable to me. That makes it even funnier or sadder when considering my terrification. (if I'm not laughing, I'm crying in mortification). Anyway... I think I'd like to stay out of the murky waters of options 3 and 4. I'll have to come up with a different song. That will mean I'll have to go and listen to all my SW CD's. What a blessing! I guess this brought up a good discussion anyway. Now, I'll just retreat into the oblivion from whence I came. I see (!) that Coda makes something called Finale Notepad that is free, or $10 for the "Pro" version.... I must investigate. :) Windows and Macintosh spoken here. There's also a package called Noteworthy Composer that's fairly inexpensive at $39 (http://www.noteworthysoftware.com/composer/). My wife likes that better than Finale... it's simpler yet pretty feature-complete for arranging. Only for Windows though. -B HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 14:07:13 -0600 (CST) From: Carolyn Andre Subject: Re: cover selection Don't know if it makes any difference re: the "low profile" and legalities, but that's a Dana Cooper song, not a SW original.
