My name is Brenda and I first discovered Susan when she opened for Cheryl Wheeler in Des Moines, IA. April 2001. I was so blown away by her talent that I became an instant fan! I have since been to three other concerts of hers. When ever she is in IA. I try to see her. The last two where the past two weeks. Both at the Maintaince Shop in Ames, and then in DM again last week! Her shows are fabulous! I have been honored to meet her several times and she is always so wonderful to talk to. I am so glad I found this list and look forward to meeting other fans of Susan's. I play guitar and sing as well, any other musicians on the list? It's usually a pretty quiet list. Lots of musicians here. I play electric bass with a bunch of other old farts - all kinds of rock and roll and folk rock. Paul Brown from Texas plays guitar and sings. List-master Charlie Sweeney does too. Suzie Thiel is a fine vocalist from what I've heard. Charisse Lowe is a long-time singer/songwriter who made a CD a couple years back. John Vavrek from Oregon sounds like he's had years of playing all kinds of instruments and venues. Young sweetheart Kellie Lin Knott is a real up-and-coming singer/songwriter who is going to going to be opening for Susan April 11, at Capos in Lowell, Mass. And I've heard that one or two established folkies have been known to lurk here. Hi Brenda, Welcome to the mailing list! I first saw Susan about seven years ago while when she opened for Kenny Rankin at the Bottom-line in NY City. Like so many of the gang in here, I was simply blown away and have seen her many times since. I write and record as do other folks in here. That takes me back to the early 80s when he was ''big'' and I saw him at the now-extinct Golden Bear in Seal Beach, CA. Always liked him. Hi, >I hope you're "Knott" kidding about that Ron! I had no idea of this combo >going down in my sister city to the south. We will HAVE to be there! Nope, Ron's not kidding -- 'tis true!! I think that'll be a sneak-out-of-work-early Friday afternoon for me ... :) Welcome to the list, Brenda! The other day, woj and I were going through some boxes of stuff and I found the ticket stub from the very first time I saw Susan: July 1, 1995 at the Friendship Festival in Fort Erie, ON. We were there to see a bunch of the others on the bill (Moxy Fruvous, Wild Strawberries, The Rheostatics, Barenaked Ladies (before they got all huge and started to suck :P), Billy Bragg), but she was the surprise of the day. She came on relatively early in the day, at a point when people were still settling in and not paying much attention. It really impressed me how by not too far into her set the crowd (and I mean crowd -- there were at least 10,000 people there) had shut up and was paying attention to her. (Well, except for woj. He was asleep. ;>) The next summer she was at Falcon Ridge, and the rest is history ... =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Dorothy Scott, 3/16/03 =============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Feb 2003 22:11:08 -0600 From: "Nanette Echols" Subject: Re: Hello Susan Fans! What's the biggest airport nearby. Bein' from Minnesota, don't know much about the Northeast. I'd probably be shoppin' for deals so I'd need a BIG city airport and I'll rent a car... Any thoughts from you locals? Thanks, Nanette (a relative newbie from St. Paul, MN), PS-I first saw Susan with Ellis Paul in Duluth, MN. It's really funny the way things work out. We went there to see Ellis (my partner is a big fan). We went to Duluth because we had something going on when they played here in the twin cities... So we drove up there. I was really tired and took a nap at the hotel and was totally late to the concert. Ellis opened so I missed most of his act... Then Susan took the stage and touched every musical cell in my (hopelessly wish I was a 'real' singer) body. She sang 'like bonsai' and I cried, she sang 'standing in my own way,' who doesn't relate to that and then she cracked me up (in a laughin' or I'd be cryin' sort of way) with 'Misery,' and then the piano set 'If I sang Cole Porter', and 'I can't be new?' among others... Then she reeled me in with 'May I suggest.' I promptly bought all the CD's I could afford and became a fan ( you guys realize that fan is short for fanatic!). She is the first musician since I became an adult (I use that term figuratively) that I've really respected. She's got all of it... Musical talent in ANY style she chooses, a fantastic voice that won't quit, a way with words and a 'it's my house' stage presence AND she's funny! Ok so the P.S. went on a little too long... but I've hardly ever posted and you know how fun it is to sing to the preverbal choir!
