A friend from church (actually, she's one of the ministers) and her husband invited everyone over to their house on Tuesday for a home concert featuring his brother, John Twist, and his wife Rachel Browning. John performed several songs first, followed by Dylan Vance (an awesome slide guitarist and one of Rachel's "back-up" artists) accompanied by string bassist Kevin Cowan also a colleague of Rachel's and a solo artist in his own right; then Rachel finished off the evening. They were all in fine voice and it was a very relaxing evening. I bought one of John's CD's and one of Rachel's, for which they thanked me profusely (I kept apologizing that I couldn't buy one of Dylan's and Kevin's as well, but it was 3 days until payday, LOL!) All the songs were awesome - all originally written by the artists, I believe. It was very hard NOT comparing Rachel to Susan or Dar or other female folk singers I'm familiar with....like I said, her songs are great but her voice is just "not my style," so to speak. But it was awesome to hear live music after going so long since my last "Susan fix," and it was nice to expand my folk horizons a bit more. They were all staying the night at Nan & Bob's house (minister & husband), then travelling to Nashville the next day for the Folk Alliance (anybody ever been to one of these? I kept asking them questions about it, because I'd never heard of it before). Anyway, I just wanted to share this exciting experience with you, because I knew all of you would appreciate what a thrill it was to hear folk music in someone's family room (the acoustics were spectacular - sunken floor, high ceiling, and low-pile carpeting). I've been listening to the 2 CD's this afternoon letting Rachel's voice grow on me, and John's too. Can't quit humming "Sugar Down Blues" in my head, LOL!
