Well, I think she's already done that at Wolftrap. or am I mistaken? I really don't think the Suze will be doing piano shows *exclusive* since there are stil plenty of folks out there who are discovering Susan even as we speak...... ferinstance...... the recent Kennedys, Nields, SW tour of the northeast elicited an amazing response on the Nields and other lists. Folks who went specifically to see the Kennedys or the Nields came away saying that Susan was the best part of the show. In spite of the fact that many of these folks had seen Susan before at Falcon Ridge, they had never experienced Susan "up close and personal" in a club venue. So I wouldn't worry too much about no more Susan on guitar. I would, however, not be surprised to see Susan doing back to back shows, maybe an early and a late, or consecutive nights where one show is the regular mix of guitar and piano, and the second show is all piano. I don't know what the future will bring, but in May, 1995, right after the release of The Last of the Good Straight Girls, Susan told me that her true musical love was playing jazz piano, and that she hoped to go back to it some day. I was surprised at the time... I think the direction of Susan's shows will depend on whether the new CD can break through to a new, bigger audience. If so, the new, bigger audience will want to hear the ''standards.'' Now I noticed that someone called Norah Jones made the top of the WFUV list. I've never really heard about Norah Jones. Anybody know anything about her? I was a bit disappointed in the selection of those who honored him. Comedian Steve Martin was the main speaker, which I thought was a strange choice. Many of his jokes had nothing to do with Paul Simon. Alicia Keys did a jazzed up version of Bridge Over Troubled Waters, which I was not crazy about. John Mellencamp, whom I've never much liked, did a 2-song medley with a voice that sounded pretty well shot. The highlight was James Taylor and Alison Krause singing The Boxer. They have to do a lot of editing on the Kennedy Center Honors every year, but this year it was especially noticeable in three places: 1. Alice Ripley's "Getting Married Today" was missing a verse. (And singing it to Elizabeth Taylor was in questionable taste.) 2. James Taylor and Alison Krauss sang "The Boxer." She held her fiddle to do the fiddle solo... which was edited out of the broadcast. 3. The Dixie Hummingbirds joined with the cast to sing Paul Simon's "Loves Me Like a Rock." Thanks to editing, we lost the final verse - a verse which, with President Bush in the audience, was most pertinent: "And if I was the President, And the Congress would call my name, I'd say now who do, who do you think you're fooling?" Glad they edited it... after all, we SO needed the time for the tribute to their boss George Stevens Jr., right?! Otherwise, an excellent show. Great jobs by Charlotte D'Amboise, Bryn Terfel and Alice Ripley. - -Tim - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ron Rosen" To: "Believers" Sent: Saturday, December 28, 2002 11:50 AM Subject: Paul Simon honored > Did anyone see Paul Simon (not the senator) being honored last night on The > Kennedy Center Honors? It's a great disc. Don't know that it warrants #1 on my top 100 list for 2002, but it's pretty good nonetheless. Her smoky, sultry, torchy cover of Hank Williams' 'Cold Cold Heart' is amazing, IMHO. Off topic, but still folk-related...I am a huge Greg Brown fan, and the man is quite prolific, disc-wise...I still have a way to go to acquire his entire body of work, but yesterday picked up a kid's CD he did, called 'Bathtub Blues' that is a blast. st HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2002 21:41:32 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: piano musings Hi, Ron noted: >Now I noticed that someone called Norah Jones made the top of the WFUV list. >I've never really heard about Norah Jones. Anybody know anything about her? Obviously, Your Mileage May Vary ... but Norah Jones does less than nothing for me. There's just no "there" there. She just seems to be going through the motions, without actually feeling anything that she's singing. And I don't think she's much of a singer, either. However, I do wish her all the best, because I think she could be just the thing to pave the way for Susan to have a good measure of success with her piano jazz stuff. If people think Norah Jones is the best thing since sliced bread, just wait until they hear Susan! Not only is she a better singer and pianist, but she conveys a *lot* more emotion and sincerity in her singing and performance. (I mean really, can you imagine Norah Jones giving "Much At All" even half the impact it has when Susan sings it on stage?) On a side note, I showed my parents the "All Mapped Out" DVD last night. They had never really heard Susan before, just heard me babble on incessantly about her. As expected, they really liked it -- my mom, a classically trained singer appreciated Susan's vocal talents (and thought "Sorry About Jesus" was rather funny), and my dad liked the piano stuff a lot. (My parents are of the generation that really resonates with the standards.) And they both laughed at the "printout gig" scene, where Jane is describing how she got the one sound man into trouble. I hope Susan is able to get her piano CD released in the coming year -- it'd be fun to give them a signed copy for next Christmas! ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Holly Figueroa, 1/26/03 ============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 28 Dec 2002 21:48:44 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Paul Simon honored Hi, I did see the Kennedy Center Honors last night -- it's kind of a family tradition to watch it when it's on. I was really happy for James Earl Jones (he will always be Darth Vader to me ;) and Paul Simon, though I think it would've been better if they'd gotten anyone besides John Mellencamp to be part of the tribute. It was truly depressing to watch Dubya sitting through the event -- he clearly didn't want to be there, and it was obvious he had no clue who the honorees were (with the exception of Paul Simon, and possibly also Liz Taylor). The bit of _Othello_ shown during the tribute to James Earl Jones was probably the first Shakespeare he had ever seen. >They have to do a lot of editing on the Kennedy Center Honors every year, >but this year it was especially noticeable in three places: > >1. Just to have *something* to do. Often their choices of tribute are questionable - like doing a tribute to Clint Eastwood by having Don Rickles and Forest Whitaker sing a song(?) - and with non-musicians it often seems like stretching it. But with Alice, Walter Cronkite noted that the song was from one of this summer's Kennedy Center Sondheim Celebration shows ("Company"), and that Sondheim was a K.C. honoree in 1993, and that Elizabeth Taylor was in the movie version of Sondheim's "A Little Night Music." Sounds like Six Degrees of Elizabeth Taylor if you ask me! > So how do you know about these edits -- were you at the actual event? No, I just watch *way* too much tv and figured it out.
