I have seen some good shows there - like Joan Baez, Indigo Girls, Dar, Mary Black, and Richard Shindell all jamming together - or our own SW and Janis Ian and Vance and Brooks Williams - but last nite's show with Susan, the Kennedy's and the Neild's was easily in that ranking, and maybe better. I honestly didn't expect much from the other 2 acts, not knowing a lot about them, but was overwhemlingly pleasantly surprised. Pete Kennedy is an amazing guitar player, and Maura's voice is sweet and clear. They did some stuff that was obviously familiar to the audience - "life is large" is one I remember, but I really loved a new song, a Irish ballad sort of thing - ?"magic gown"?- a real showcase for both of them. I had heard a bit of the Neild sisters stuff, and knew I liked the harmonies they create, but again, my expectation was far short of the real thing. Such a range of songs and emotion, and always lots of emotion. They did "sweetness" (actually, the whole gang did that one) and "snowman" and several others that I can't remember without a list in front of me. My SIL was so impressed he went and bought a CD, and he is broke and doesn't impress easily! Susan, for her part, sang the usual selection from NNF, plus St. Mary's, cos we were in a church (banter about folk music usually in Unitarian churches, not Baptist), then to the piano for "I'd be good for you", and (my favorite) "light sleeper". The best part, tho, was the interaction between the groups. Suze played piano for a Neilds song, Suze and Pete jammed on a funky/campy Xmas medley (personally, I'd like to see that recorded and put on some album - Ed Gerhardt has got nothin' on these guys!) Neilds and Kennedy's did several songs together, and the whole gang did about 6 songs or so at the end. "sweetness", "dona nobis pacem" (sorry Latin's a little rusty), Gershwin's "summertime", the old ?Buffalo Springfield? "stop, hey, what's that sound" (OK, I know that's not the title, but ya'll know the song!) with more great guitar, and also "so this is Xmas" which was absolutely fantastic, harmonies happening all over the place - I kept hearing more new stuff in the music. And I KNOW that our trusty video guy was recording - I would LOVE to see this concert, in its entirety, on DVD. I would pay a pretty penny for that. All in all a wonderful evening, nearly 3 hours of fantastic music, and we picked up 2 copies of the DVD. My only regret is that I never got connected with any of the other believers that I know were there (sorry guys! - I was the one on the front row center aisle seat, left side) Best $20 I have spent in ages. that's all for now - I will let someone more familar with the other music (and a better memory!) post detailed set lists. I just had to rave. I, who just got home from the airport, agree. It had the magic of some of the things that happen at FRFF. One of the better shows you'll ever see. Too bad today's shows in Great Barrington were the last. > Pete Kennedy is an > amazing guitar player, and Maura's voice is sweet and clear. I agree, the Kennedys are great. This was the first time I'd seen them on stage. And Maura's outfits and hair are always interesting. I was very impressed with Pete's guitar playing and Maura's voice is so controlled and wonderful. > I had heard a bit of the Neild sisters stuff, and knew I liked the harmonies > they create, but again, my expectation was far short of the real thing. I found some of the emotions of Nerrissa's recent and older songs very moving. The banter between the sisters is also fun. I got to meet Harry Keates after the show. Seems like a very friendly fellow. > All in all a wonderful evening, nearly 3 hours of fantastic music Yes, and by some magic, I ran into Kellie Lin at the Waldenbooks Store around 5:00 pm. I wasn't sure if it was her until I saw her Folk Alliance bag. Kellie invited me to join her, woj, mosh, meth, jeff, and mosh's friend erica for dinner before the show. It was great to meet everyone and to get to know woj and meth better. The New England believers are great folks. At the restaurant we ran into lurkers Gail and Patty (Patti?), who said, "Is that Ron?" It's a strange phenomenon of the internet that people can know a lot about some of us, and we know nothing about them! I told Gail and Patty that I would out them as lurkers!! Gail and Patty saved a row of seats for us, for which I must thank them. It allowed us to wander in at the last moment. It was really great meeting and hanging out with all of you!! Sorry I didn't get to meet Lori. Did I mention that Kellie Lin is a sweetheart? Did I mention that I love Susan Werner? I've been a huge Nields fan since well before I knew who Susan Werner was , and this was the year when I finally came around to loving The Kennedys. I had pretty high expectations for this show, and I'm happy to say they were exceeded. >Ok, folks, I've never been to Falcon Ridge or Kerrville, but I go to Newport >most years. Go to Falcon Ridge!! It's amazing! (And tickets are already on sale, at a stunning discount for a very limited time.) Imagine what happened last night going on for an entire weekend. >I honestly didn't expect much from the other 2 acts, not knowing a lot about >them, but was overwhemlingly pleasantly surprised. Pete Kennedy is an >amazing guitar player, and Maura's voice is sweet and clear. I think "amazing" is an understatement, myself. :) And Maura's no slouch, either. >I had heard a bit of the Neild sisters stuff, and knew I liked the harmonies >they create, but again, my expectation was far short of the real thing. Such >a range of songs and emotion, and always lots of emotion. They are wonderful. Nerissa is a great songwriter, and Katryna has a wonderfully expressive voice. Plus, they're very goofy. (Katryna's "air caterpillar" during the big show-ending jam is one of the funniest things I've seen in a while. ) >The best part, tho, was the interaction between the groups. Suze played >piano for a Neilds song "100 Names", which will probably go down in history as Nerissa's masterpiece. It's a wrenching song, especially considering she wrote it for her husband and now they're divorced. It was really painful to watch her sing it. Susan's piano part is just so gorgeous. And Katryna wasn't kidding when she said it's in F-sharp! That's what happens when you write a song on the guitar and then decide to transpose it to piano after the fact. Ouch. It's a testament to Susan's musical ability that she was able to make it work. >, Suze and Pete jammed on a funky/campy Xmas medley >(personally, I'd like to see that recorded and put on some album - Ed >Gerhardt has got nothin' on these guys!) That jazz guitar duet was worth the two hour drive through the rain, and then some. (For the record, it was "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" and "The Christmas Song".) Pete told me afterwards that they had been fooling around with it during sound check last weekend, and the others all convinced them to do it during the show. I'm *so* glad they did!! I've always felt that Susan sells herself short by not playing guitar on her albums, and that duet proved to me that I'm right. >Neilds and Kennedy's did several >songs together, and the whole gang did about 6 songs or so at the end. >"sweetness", Actually, that was "Easy People" ... the Nields did "The Sweetness" during their own set with The Kennedys. :) >"dona nobis pacem" (sorry Latin's a little rusty), Gershwin's >"summertime", That was *incredible*. Folks on the Nields list had been complaining that a show billed as "Summer In December" didn't contain any summer songs, so that was their response. I guess sometimes whining *does* pay! ;) > the old ?Buffalo Springfield? "stop, hey, what's that sound" >(OK, I know that's not the title, but ya'll know the song!) "For What It's Worth". :) Fitting, since the Kennedys had hung a homemade banner on the altar rail behind them that said "All we are saying is give peace a chance". The Nields have been singing this song with as many onstage guests as possible for years -- it was simply amazing, with four guitars and five-part harmony. >And I KNOW that our trusty video guy was recording - I would LOVE to see this >concert, in its entirety, on DVD. I would pay a pretty penny for that. You're not alone. Hey Harry, you've got over 300 potential customers just from the audience alone ... how about it? The best part about this tour is, the Nields and Kennedys fans are raving about Susan with as much fervor as you raved about the Nields and Kennedys. This little tour has done a lot to expand her fan base, for sure! ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Holly Figueroa, 1/26/03 ============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Dec 2002 20:37:48 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Jammin' in Lexington Hi, Ron (yay, glad you made it home okay!) posted: >The Nields were very good last night.
