The show was brilliant - Jake Jacobsen & the Circle of Friends volunteers have really found a special room for their series. Thanks to them for all of their hard work. What a magical space! They've got some great shows left in the season yet, Greg Greenway & band being one of them, so I'd suggest checking out their site & going. Whew! Gorgeous! So, anyway, the fabulous Rachael Davis opened the show & got a standing ovation - the girl is beyond talented. As Susan said, later in the evening, "Folk music needs Rachael Davis." There you have it, folks; the official Susie Werner stamp of approval. If you don't have Rachael's debut CD, "Minor League Deities", get yerself off your rump and buy it! And then check her tour listings & catch the spectacle in person. Rachael was sweet, hilariously funny, & just so damn musical! No words will do her justice. Just CHECK HER OUT!!! (Other listers, please chime in, if you'd like to add to this shameless plug!) Susan seemed in good spirits & delivered one of the better performances as of late. Mellow & sunny; wry & sardonic. - she covered all the bases. Jake & Circle of Friends had recently purchased a stunningly beautiful baby grande piano. & Susan certainly made good use of it. She was reasonably chatty, so we received a bit on the daylight savings time vs. standard time ("every artist has a cause & this is mine.") One of my favorite bits was susan was talking about how she feels should be more political, and that there were 3 political oxymorons that had her in a snit....she commented that she was sure these three would be on our lists too. They were: 1) compassionate conservatism 2) liberal leadership 3) all weather clogs she made the usual goofy faces & managed to milk quite a bit of laughter out of that. fun, fun, fun! musical highlights for me were the bob marley cover of "i don't want to wait in vain for your love" (is that the title? what a beautiful lyric!)," 3/4 moon", l"et's regret this in advance", & a heartwrenching version of "may i suggest"... the sound was good - much better than the mess at the somerville in october, so i'm a happy camper. Oh, and how could I forget?!?! the wardrobe! susan was sporting a lovely red, sleeveless vest, with black broquade flowers, & black pants. i WANT that shirt, & I told Susan so. She directed me to Ann Taylor & encouraged me to check out "all the different colors." hope ya'll are well! But I guarantee, or your money back, that if you go to http://music.amazon.com/ then click on "Free Downloads" then search for "Susan Werner" you'll find all four of these songs. Really! Note: These are the full complete unencumbered songs in all their radiant glory, not some tinny sounding 30sec samples. Another note: this is in the "Free Downloads" section of the site, which is distinctive and separate from the regular CD purchasing area. The first time I ever saw/heard of Ms. Davis was when she opened for Susan at the Iron Horse this past spring. I thought "pretty good for an opener", but that was about it. Over the summer I saw her open for Susan McKeown at Tom Neff's Grassy Hill barn, and my estimation escalated to "pretty cool". Tom Neff made her give me a copy of her CD (which is very good, you all should buy it). Then last month woj and I saw her as part of the Nightbirds series at the Bottom Line in NYC, where we had gone to see another Rachael (Sage). Ms. Davis, who is maybe five feet tall in heels and disappears when she turns sideways, stood up on that stage and the first thing she did was belt out an a cappella tour de force called "Grandma's Hands" that knocked the entire room on its ass. She didn't let any of us back up until her too-short set was done, topped off with a diptych of Robert Johnson songs that could have peeled the paint off the back wall. This, my friends, is the exact same set she did last night. No wonder she got a standing O. Jane commented that she and Susan get the same feeling watching Ms. Davis that they got when watching Dar Williams and Erin McKeown open for Susan back in the days ... and I can totally see where that is coming from. Dar is -- well, Dar. And the first time I saw Erin McKeown I wasn't very impressed, but she has been getting exponentially better ever since, and that's the same track Rachael Davis has been on with me. She's so young, too (I don't know if she's 22 yet), so this is one name we're going to be hearing for a long, long time. >Susan seemed in good spirits & delivered one of the better performances as >of late. Agreed. She did pretty much the same set as at the Iron Horse, but that was fine because woj had his minidiscs with him this time. :) So now we have a recording of the "Three Blind Mies" song, and I am happy. I really like the new songs, particularly "Three-Quarter Moon". Looking forward to seeing Susan with the Nields and the Kennedys in Lexington (and maybe Great Barrington too, weather permitting) in December! That's going to be an incredible show. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Chris & Meredith Thompson, 12/8/02 ============================================== HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at World Cafe CDs http://worldcafecds.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 22:35:04 -0500 From: dances with virgos Subject: Re: new cd??? when we last left our heroes, Ron Rosen exclaimed: >It's well known that the next album is going to be the ''romantic >standards,'' perhaps even with a big-band sound. Will they be together when Friends ends? I think Susie's lovers should be involved in some great international intrigue involving Al Quaeda and saving the free world from nuclear and biological destruction. Sounds interesting. "The band [Musical Youth] became popular and won a contract after appearing on a BBC radio show. For their first album, they wanted to record "Pass The Kutchie," a song by the Mighty Diamonds. However, 'Kutchie' referred to a marijuana-smoking device so it was changed to 'Dutchie,' which meant 'cooking pot.'''
